IMPERIAL POLITICS.

Writs for the new elections rendered necessary by the appointment of mem bers of the Ministry were moved in the House of Commons to-day, with the exception of that for Newcastle, after which the House adjourned until Saturday, Feb, 5.
Mr Chamberlain states that every effort will be made to extend domestic
control, to insist on the supremacy of the Crown, and to maintain the integrity of the Empire. Mr H. N. Fowler has been appointed Financial Secretary to the Ireasury, and Mr J. T, Hitbert as Secretary to the Admiralty. Mr E. R. Wodehouse is likely to be appointed Political Secretary to the Colonies.
Mr Gladstone has issued an address to the electors of Midlothian on the occasion of his coming before them in consequence of his assuming office. In his address he states that it is the duty of the Government to carefully examine the social state of Ireland, more especially as regards the occurrence of agrarian crimes, the fulfilment of contracts, and the pressure of the present low prices upon the farming interests. Mr Gladstone states that the chief hope and purpose of his Government will ba to examine whether it is not feasible to try some method of dea’mg with the crisis by going nearer to the seat of the mischief. Referring to the Irish difficulty, Mr Gladstone, in an address to the electors of Midlothian, states that Her Majesty’s Government hope to introduce some scheme which shall promise more stability than is secured by the present law for the repression of crime. He adds that, while deeply conscious of the responsibility resting upon them, they are comforted by the belief that they are engaged upon a work of peace. The Earl of Aberdeen has been ap ( pointed Lord-Lieutenant of T reland. Lord Wolverton assumes the portfolio of Postmaster-General ; !>ir Lyon Playfair, Vice-President of the Committee of the Council of Education ; Ear! Morley, Commissioner of Works ; Mr John Rigby, Q.C., Solicitor-General ; and Mr James Bryce, Uuder-Secrelary for Foreign Affairs. The following further appointments in the new Ministry have been made : Sir Lyon Playfair, Vic -President of the Council.

Mr Jesse Codings, Secretary todhe Local Government Board.

The remaining writs rendered necessary by the change of Ministry have been moved, and Parliament adjourned until the 18th inst. The divorce case in which Sir Charles Dilke is co-respondent is to be tried on Wednesday next, and, should he be acquitted, he will take the portfolio of Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Lord Rosebery going to the Colonial Office, and Lord Granville being appointed Lord Privy Seal.
