THE ELECTIONS AT HOME.
London, Dec. 4. Mr William Sproston Caine has been defeated. The Standard states that the chance of the Conservatives obtaining a majority is hopeless. The latest election returns show that 263 Liberal, 213 Conservatives, and 54 Parnellites have been returned up to the present. Mr Joseph Chamberlain addressed a public meeting at Leicester last evening, and in the course of bis speech referred to the probable stale of parties in the new Parliament, and predicted that fresh ih cHons would t«ke place at no distant date after the assembling of Parliament Dec. 5. The Liberal candidates continue to triumph in the farming counties. For Lanarkshire the Conservativ- s on.y secured two seals out of. seven. . For Ivernesslure, Mr C. F. Macintosh, representative of the crofters, has defeated Sir Kenneth Mackenzie and Mr McLeod, and a crofter candidate has also secured the Argyleshire seat. The election wi'l finish on Wednesday next, 9th inst. Dec. 6. The Liberals have secured 206 seats in Englan 1. 25 in Wales, 58 in Scotland, and 1 in Ireland ; ami the Conservatives have obtained 214 in finer laud, S in Wales, 9 in Scotland, and 17 in Ireland, Sir Samuel Wilson was rejected by 1461 voles. The Hon, E. Stanhope was elected, sad the Hon. G. 0. Dawnay and Mr E, D. Gray, a Home Ruler, have been rejected. Mr I’. M. Healey has been returned for Derry. Among the members who have lost their seats at the present elections are Sir Wilfred Lawson, Sir Ferrer HerM'hell, ami Mr J, B. Burleigh. Sir W. Hart Dyke has been re-elected for Kent.
