A rumor has been circulated to the effect that Sir J, E. Gorst is to succeed Sir H. C. Lopes as Judge of the (Queen’s Bench division of the High Court of Justice, the latter succeeding the Right Hon. Sir K, Baggallay as one of the Lord Justices of Appeal, Sir J. E. Gorst has denied the rumor so far as it applies to himself. In a sculling match between Courtney and Edgecombe, the latter was defeated. The Standard, commenting on the action of the War Office in refusing to allow Major Downes to draw half pay whilst in the employ of the Victorian Government, urges the abolition of such an obsolete regulation. It is proposed to organise a com rnittee of merchants and shipowners in opposition to the Australian shipping ring. The members of the Geographical Society’s exploring party have arrived here, and met with a hearty welcome, a large number of people assembling to meet thb steamer. Captain Ererell, the leader of the expedition, hag made public the details of his operations in New Guinea. He ascended the Fly River for a distance, of 100 miles from its mouth. He reports some portions of the country to be densely populated, but the natives maintained a very inifriemllv attitude throughout. Captain Everell obtained some good specimens of native timbers, hut he states that he met with no signs of gold or silver or galena. Hie only animals encounleted were kangaroos and pigs. Sailed, this morning—Hauroto, for New Zealand ports.

The Mararoa left tc-day with the Homeward San Francisco mails. Dec, 5. . O.M.S. Nelson sails for New Zealand to-day. On the motion of Sir John Robertson, the Legislative Assembly has adjourned until the 9th inst., in order to prevent the Government from proceeding with business.
