Mr Thornton has been appointed Minister of Mines, which port-, folio was previously held by Mr F. A. Wright, but was resigned by him after his defeat at the general elections, Mr Thornton will be the representative of the Government in the Legislative Council. Nov. 15. The Plenary Council was opened today by His Eminence Cardinal Moran, There was a large and representative gathering present, including fifteen Bishops, numerous clergy, and thousands of laity. Dr Redwood, Bishop of Wellington, preached the opening sermon. The procession which followed was of a most imposing character. Brisbane, Nov, 14. The deadlock between the two branches of the Queensland Legislature still continues, the Legislative Council insisting on the amendment to tlu Appropriation Bill eliminating the pro vision for the payment of members. A joint Committee of both Houses hat been appointed to try to arrive at an understanding. Meanwhile all payments of any kind from the Consolidated Fund have been discontinued. The manager of the Queensland National Bank of this city received a telegram to-day from Cooktown confirming, the previous information respecting the massacre of the New South Wales Geographical Society’s Exploring Expedition at Fly River, New Guiuea. The telegram farther states a second party is being organised by Mr Douglas to ascertain beyond a doubt the fate of the expedition.
