TEMPERANCE CONGRESS.

A congress of delegates from the various temperance bodies throughout the colony commenced sitting at Wellington on Wednesday morning. The following were present Messrs Harding (Hawkes’ Bay), Scott (Ashburton), Hopkirk (Takaka, Nelson), Beaumont (Christchurch), Barker (Timaru), Cameron and F. Fulton (Dunedin), Brooker (Nelson), Honl (Kaikoura), Thompson (Pieton), F. H. Fraser, J. Holmes, W, Price, M. F. Kennedy, Davy, (x. Wade, J. 0. Edwards, Nicbolla, and the Rev. L. M. Isitt (Wellington), and Mrs Collis (Taranaki). Mr Harding, G.W.C.T. of New Zealand, was voted to the chair, He.said that there were now three Temperance Alliances in New Zealand, one in each of the chief centres of the colony. It had struck him that it would be a good tiling if the whole of the Alliances were united, and it was at bis invitation that the present Congress had been convened. The Chairman submitted a series of resolutions which he had drawn up, and the meeting adjourned till the following afternoon, when representatives from several ether districts were present, and the following were adopted ;—“ That the proposed Alliance be called the New Zealand Alliance for the Promotion of Temperance and the Suppression of the

Liquor Traffic ; ’ “That the said Alliance consist of all pempiß favorable to the above object who shall give in their name and pay an annual subscription of not less than 5s per annum and all members of the affiliated societies “ That any society may affiiliato by paying the sum of 20s per annum and an additional 20s for every extra delegate sent to tl e annual meeting.” “That an annual meeting of delegates be held, each affiliated Society being entitled to elect a delegate for each guinea contributed to the funds of the Alliance, provided that in no case shall there be more than one delegate for each 100 members.or frac« tional part thereof, and that the meeting elect a President and Governing Board.” “That the foregoing resolutions be forwarded to every knowp temperance organisation in New Zealand, and that they be requested to elect delegates to meet in Wellington on or about the 25th January next to formally; inaugurate the Alliance.” A preliminary executive was appointed to make the necessary arrangements for that meeting. The Chairman (Mr Harding) announced his Intention of paying the whole of the expenses of the present Congress. The Congress then terminated,
