GERALDINE SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meetiug of this Committee was held in the schoolroom on Tuesday erening. Present—Messrs N. Dunlop (Chairman), R. S. Cook, G. Ward and Sherratt. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read as follows. From the Board of Education, forwarding three copies of the Education Ordinance for the use of members. From the same, informing the Committee that in future all applications for grants for repairs are to be referred in the first instance to the Inspector, who will furnish quarterly reports to be considered at the Board's meeting in April, July, October and January, with a view of obtaining the sanction of the Board for such works as are not properly chargeable on the funds of Committees.
From the same, notifying that £7 would be paid to the Committee on re ceipt of Toucher stating that the repairs to the fences and spouting had been completed. •visitors' report. Mr A, Sherratt reported on behalf of the Tisiting Committee that they had inspected the spouting on the Master's Houne, and had the necessary repairs to the pump effected. On the day they visited the school they found everything in good working order, There were 1")0 childien present. This low attendance they found to be attributable to the prevalence of chicken-pox among the scholars, many being kept at home on that account. As the annual pupil teachers' examination commenced in Timaru on the 23rd inst., the Visitors aud Chairman had sanctioned the closing of the school for the U6Ual tortnightly midwinter holidays, from the 19th June.
Mr Cook and Mr Ward thought it rather strange that the school should be broken up and some of the members of the Committee know nothing about it till it had been doae. The Chairman said he had informed Mr Cook on the day the school was broken up that it was going to take place. Mr Ceok said he did not know anything about it till it had been sanctioned. He was of opinion the school had too many holidays.
Mr SI errutt. said that even if tln-y had had a meeting of the whole Committee they con'd onlj have done the same thing, the matter then dropped, REPAIRS TO THE FENCES. On the motion of Mr Cook, seconded by Mr Ward, it was resolved to repair the picket fence in front of the schoolground, and ihat a Sub-Committee consisting of the Chairman and Mr A. Sherratl be appointed to call for tenders and see the work carried out, The Sub-Committee were also empowered to get the necessary repairs done to the spouting on the master’s house. HEAD MASTEr’b REPORT. This report was read as follows : “ I have the honor to report that the average attendance at school for the past four weeks has been 171.—At his last visit, the Inspector suggested that holes for ink pots should he bored in the desks in the Infants’ room, in order that writing on paper might be commenced in Standard I, I would respectfully request that the work be done. Also that the desks in the boys* room be varnished.—l am, etc,, “ Thos, Hughes.” It was resolved that the Sub-Com-mittee carry out the works as requested. VISITORS. Messrs Ward and Lodge were ap pointed visitors for the month. ACCOUNTS, Accounts amounting to £2 2s 8d were passed for payment and the meeting then terminated.
