THE NEW TARIFF.
At a meeting of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce on Monday resolutions were passed condemning the new tariff .»nd suggesting that the Government should not interfere with the tariff of 1882 this session, but during the recess consult with the various Chambers of Commerce throughout the colony on the matter. The Wellington and Christchurch Chambers of Commerce have also decided against the tariff. The Christchurch Corn Exchange have sent a protest against the proposed duty on coal.
At a large public meeting in Oamaru the new tariff was condemned. The Local Bodies Finance and Powers Bill was condemned as it would lead to more expense and perpetuate the slavish dependence of local bodies upon the Government. A resolution was carried unanimously in favor of asking the Government to forego their proposed vote of £50,000 for immigration. The resolutions will be forwarded to the members for the town district.
A large meeting at Port Chalmers passed a resolution approving generally of the new tariff proposals of the Colonial Treasurer.
At a meeting of thoso favorable to protection held in Cimstchurch on Tuesday a resolution was unanimously carried approving as a step in the right direction of the action of the Government in revising the tariff so as to encourage colonial industries and productions. Forty-eight members of the House have leclared against the new tariff.
