TEMUKA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of the above was held last Tuesday evening. Present —Messrs J. Brown (in the chair), Bolton, Lee, Miles, Gray, and Blyth. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr J. T. M. Hayhurst, apologising for his absence owing to haying to attend a Government parade. From the South Canterbury Caledonian Society, stating that they could not alter their scholarship bo as to give it to pupils attending District High Schools. From the head teacher, stating that the number on roll was—Boys, 197 ; girls, 150; total, 347. Strict average attendance : Boys, 134.8 ; girls, 90.2 ; total, 225. Working average attendance: Boys, 138.7: girls, 95; total, 233.7. Highest attendance, 270. He attributed the small attendance to the prevalence of colds and aore throats. ' From Mr A. Russell, Superintendent of. the Presbyterian Sunday School, stating that he could not pay the amount charged for the use of the achool, and also that he had vacated it. He thanked the Committee for having BO far convenience the Sunday School.
From the; Board of Education, stating that in future the salaries of teachers wouli be paid to themselves instead of through the Committee.—lt was resolved—" That in answer to the circular re payment of teachers direct, the Board be informed that the Bank declines to open an account with the j teachers." ATTENDANCE RETURNS. The Head Master stated that, at the request of the Inspector, he was desirous of keeping copies of returns, and asked for a cheap portfolio to be obtained for that purpose. It ras resolved—" That the Secretary request the Board of Education to pupply the same." REPAIRS. Mr Bljth stated that one of the grates in tbs school was out of order, and that Mr Findlay stated it would be necessary to tak« out the mantelpiece and put in new bolts. After some conversation, it was regolved to authorise the Chairman to have the grate repaired, Mr Blyth also submitted a letter from the head teacher, slating that the rain was coming in through tbe roof; the windows could not be raised, and Jocks and grates needed repairing. He also stated that he had ordered the repairs to bt done,
ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of 15s 6d were passed for payment. TENDERS. Ibe tender of Mr E. Brown for supplying coal and firewood was accepted, the price being : Newcastle coal, 40s ; long cut firewood, 22s per cord. VISITORS. Messrs Brown and Gray were appointed Visitors for the ensuing month, and the meeting adjournod.
