1 Three girls absconded from the Burnham Industrial School last Tuesday night. It is supposed that they have gone in the direction of Ashley. One of them was leading a criminal life in Christchurch previous to her committal to Burnham. The s.s. Wairarapa arrived at Auckland from Sydney, yesterday. The Arawata from Fiji arrived at Auckland, yesterday, with 28 passengers among them the missing boat's crew of the Nightingale, regarding whom it was surmised that foul play had been used. The chess match, Christchurch versus Dunedin has fallen through, the latter Club being unable to play at present. The Secretary of tb.9 Canterbury Archery Club has received per Te Anau the returns of the scores make by the Adelaide Club in their match with the Canterbury Club, showing a considerable balance in favor of the Adelaide Club, they having made 1,325 points against 837 scored by our local archers. .

Two hundred and ninety-eight pledges were taken, and over 400 persons donned the blue ribbon, A trial was made in Punedin on Tuesday night of the electric search light for Auckland harbor defence. A groat fire occurred in New Plymouth on Tuesday morning when property to the value of £20,000 was destroyed, the insurances amounting to £IO,OOO. Among the buildings destroyed were the Coartenay Auction Mart, the New Plymouth Branch of the N.Z. Clothing Factory Co., and the Courtenay Hall.
