ST. SAVIOUR'S CHURCH, TEMUKA.

The social gathering held in connection with St. Saviour's Church last Tuesday, was not so successful as might have been expected. There were reasons for this. The gathering was first announced to take place in the Park, but it was afterwards decided to change it to Green Hayes. No doubt this had something to do with its unsuccessfulness, as the place is a considerable distance away. But the principal reason was that the day was extremely warm, while very high winds blew the dust about in all directions and rendered a journey an undertaking which many would Dot care to experience. In this way the weather militated against the success of the social gathering, and consequently the attendance was not large. This is very much to be regretted, as the Committee went to great trouble and expense to get it up, and certainly left nothing undone to make it attractive. From an early hour the Committee, with many others who assisted, were at work in erecting tents and making other arrangements, and by 9 a.m„ everything was ready. There were on the ground two large marquees one devoted to the sale of refreshments and the other to fancy goods and needle work. At about 9 a.m. the ladies who had control of these arrived, and set about arranging their different stalls. The stall for fancy goods and needlework was presided over by Mrs O'Halloran and Misses Ladbrook and Tate. They had an excellent display of needlework and other things, and they worked perseveringly to dispose of them. The flower stall was in charge of Misses F. Guy, Wills and Rayner, who had a beautiful display of flowers, and Mrs Hargreaves with Miss Pilbrow had a Christmas tree, suspended from the branches of which were a large number of toys and other articles, and they may be credited with having exerted themselves to their utmost to dispose of them. Mis Hamilton was unable to attend through indisposition. The next stall was devoted to refreshments, which was under the supervision of Mesdamess Voyce and Austin, and they also left nothing undone to secure custom. Everything was provided gratuitously, and the display was extremely creditable. In amongst the trees at the back of the tents a target for shooting was erected. This, which Mr L. Rayner superintended, wa3 about the most successful part of the proceedings, as it was kept busy all day in firing for prizes. While all these were going on others were playing cricket and amusing themselves in various ways. The ecen« of the gathering was certainly an extremely beautiful one. It was in a paddock adjoining the lawn fronting the residence of Mr Ha y hurst, which art and nature have combined to render beautiful. Adjoining the lawn is a splendid sheet of water caused by the damming up at this particular spot of the Sod Town Creek. On the banks of this grow weeping willows and the spot is certainly delightful. Here three boats were plying all daj', and were well patronised. The boats were looked after by the Rev. Mr Hamilton, Mr T. B. Sheen and Mr J. J. Heap, and were the great attraction of the whole aff.u'r. On the whole those who attended enjoyed themselves to their heart's content for every provision bad been made for entertaining them, and the meagre attendance was somewhat compensated for by the enthusiasm of those present. At abont 6.30 p.m. the proceedings came to a close, and all returned to their homes highly elated with the day's amusement. We have been specially requested to mention Messrs E. Lee and G. Davey, to whom the Committee are indebted for the use of horses and traps and for general assistance in taking goods to the ground. They also made several journeys with passengers aid made themselves generally useful all day.
