TEMUKA YOUNG MEN'S CLUB.
A general meeting was held on Monday evening, July 28th, in the Club room. The Rev. T. A. Hamilton, President of the Club, occupied the chair, and thirty members were present. The Secretary read the minutes of the last meeting, which were duly passed. ' ; Several accounts were then 1 brought forward, but it was resolved that they be left for the Committee to pass.
The Secretary then read letters from the Revs! D. Gordon and P. Wills (in answer to his letters J declining to become Vice-Presidents of the Club. The Rev. Mr Wills stated "he preferred not to join the Club." The Rev. Mr Gordon replied " that he was likely to leave the district, adding that. as a minister, he could not joi« the Club,'' There replies evoked considerable comneent and discussion, as it bad bean hoped that these gentlemen would have given valuable assistance to the Cluhm intellectual culture, and would have been instrumental in raising its tone by inspiring its members to higher things whilst pursuing manly games and amusements. But, however, these hopes were dashed to tha ground when thf replies were received. Mr Langridge then proposed, and Mr Nicholas seconded—" That the Club regrets the Rev. Messrs Gordon and Wills have refused to join the Club, and tint Messrs J. Findlay and A. Russell be elected Vice-Presidents of the Club." Thin was carried unanimously, and Messrs Findlay and Russell promised to give the Club all the support in their power, which announcement was received with hearty applause. A letter was read from Mr Hogb«n, Treasurer of the Christchufch Young Men's Club, ftating that the. Cub had been closed, and also enclosing a list of articlesonhand to dispose of. After a little discussion, Mr O'Halloran proposed. Mr J. Langridge secorded, and it was carried—" That the Secretary purchasp the articles chosen from the list, «s cheaply as possible, and also that Mr I Hogben be written to re tha lecfuro he promised to give in the holiday?. • The following gentlemen were then elected members of the Club:—Mr E. Davis (proposed by Mr T. Thomson and seconded by Mr J. Langridge) ; Mr D, Roddick (proposed by Mr J. Langridge and seconded by C, Lucas) ; Mr G. Velvin (proposed by Mr J. Langridre and seconded by Mr J. Russell) ; Mr J. Langskail (proposed by Mr J. Langridge and seconded by Mr J. Russell) ; Mr W. Edwards (proposed by Mr Burke and seconded by Mr T. Thomson.) Mr O'Halloran proposed, Mr Langridge seconded, and it was carried
thanks be passed to Mr Surridge for painting tbe letters on th<> front of (he Club House, and that ha be presented with a honorary mamber's ticket," Mr O'Halloran than proposed a vote of thanks', which was carried unanimously, to Mr Rolieston for his subscription of one guinea, which he promised should be his yearly donation. After a lively discussion respecting country members, who. lived a, longdisr tance away and would not be able to get to the Ctob very often.
Mr Burke proposed, 3*r Nicholas geconded, and it was carried—" That conntry members living outiide a radius of four miles shall pay in entrance fee of ss, and a monthly subscription of Is, being half the amount of active members' subscriptions." Mr J. Findlay and Mr A. Clinch were then appointed as a sub-Com-mittee to manage the gymnastics.
The Rev. T. Hamilton stated he would be glad to give an address to the members of the Club, laying before them the objects and obligations of the Club, and how it shouhW&e carried out, as a means of physical and intellectual culture.
This was well received, and a hearty vote of thanks to the Chairman, proposed by Mr Langridge and seconded by Mr Thomson, terminated a very p'easant meeting.
