Sham Pox iw Austbaiia.—The K"ow Zealand Government are communicating by telegraph with the authorities in Australia and the Health Officers in this colony, with reference to the smallpox question, and are awaiting replies before taking action, at they do no) wish to enforce a general quarantine unless absolutely necessary, as it would very seriously disturb the large trade which this colony has with Australia. Should it be decided not to enforce a general quarantine, every precaution will be taken by the health officers to prevent the disease being carried into the colony, by the minute examination of every vessel for traces of disease, and should any be found, the vessel {and passengers would be quarantined for the full period.
Th* Dbtkbmion. Colonel Trimble is reported to have ipoken as follows on the depressed state of the colony :—" He would like to say a word or two before concluding on the stagnation that exists in business. He believed that no one thing had caused the stagnation, but it was due to :i lon:.' I>V of
causes. The colony had formerly been -uiug. too fast,in its expenditure for works,; and what was wanted bow was rest, in order that the colony might recuperate itself and gain fresh strength. The decrease in the value of wool and wheat in the Home market had helped to produce the depression, but he was hopeful this would pass away. A ' bogey \ had been raised about the introduction of Indian wheat into the London market, which threatened to swamp the colonial article. That, he felt confident, was quite absurd, as it would cost the shippers in India more than the eolonial shipped to land their wheat in the London market. Not a word was suid about the Russian wheat, which had more largely increased than the Indian, but he was persuaded the colonial producer had nothing to fear either from India or Russia in that respect."
