A boy named John Kurmode, 4J years old, was killed by a log rolling on him, on the Temokori Range (Auckland) on Saturday, The body, of William Wakelin, a painter, who has been missing since the 18th, was found in the Silverstream (Otago) on Monday morning, i He had been in a desponding state-of-mind. On Saturday,! Mrs Collins, residing near the camp at Featherston (Auckland) while in a state of drunkenness, set fire to her house. She was severely burnt and died oh Sunday. The house vrts saved. John McCleary, charged with attempting to set ; fire to his unoccupied house at Nelson, was brought before the Resident Magistrate on 4j Monday. The case lasted six hours. The prisoner declined to make any statement, and was committed to take his trial at the Supreme Court. Mr Pitt, who appeared for the accused, applied for bail, which was refused.
A man, name unknown, fell down in the street at Auckland, and. died in the) Waitemata Hotel,' to which, he was carried, in a few minutes. He looked an emaciated and sickly man. He answered to the description of a man who has been sleeping in Lett's stabVs for a week past, and is said to be a painter from Dunedin, and was recently in the hoipital there. He is about 40 years old. On Monday morning an old resident of Timaru, Mr Patrick Joseph Dungan, irai found dead in his cottage, near the corner of William Street and tha Main South Road. Ho was last seen alive on ; Saturday evening;, and from certain circumstances noted when his body wu found, it was concluded that he died on Sunday morning. At the inquest a verdict was returned to the effect that deceased died on Sunday, the oausa being ' heart diaease-
A serious and peculiar accident occurred at t?outhßakaia on Friday evening to.Mr Mclnman. He was taking a wooden roller, some 13ft 6in wide, from the sala yards to the station, and, whilst driving, the 1 horse swerved and caised him to fall under the roller, which passed on to him, and then the horse stopped, so tbat tho whole weight of the. rol!«r.i.,rast«)d on the unfortunate man's; body. He *ai promptly released by some onlookers, but having apparently sustained internal injuries he was taken.oh to Christchurch by the express. The sufferer is over 65 years of age.—Mail. J. M. Girdlestohe, a traveller from Swan's brewery, shot himself either by accident or design at Petane, Hawkes Bay, on Tuesday. He was seen to fall, but when picked up was-'quite dead. Girdleetone had just been dismissed from his employment, and is knows to have h(sen involved financially. > From the evidence given at the inquest! it would appear that the deceased borrowed a gun to go bittern shooting, and carried it at full cock. In getting through a wire fence the trigger of the gun got caught fey the end of a piece of wire which projected at a splice,, and the confcen't of tha gun were discharged into the unforiuaate man. The jury returned a verlict of accidental death.
M. Hansen, a married man, who a week or two ago eloped *o Nelson, with Mrs Compton, wife of <n employs' in Carter's ironmongery establishment, arrived at Manukau in the Wanaka from Auckland oo Monday, haying been arrested on a charge of wife desertion. Mrs Compton accompanied In'm. At the Orienting* wharf Mrs Hansen was waiting to receive her erring spouse, whom she seemed disposed to forgive. As s-on a« tho women saw each other a free fight ' took place between them, the belligerent females being separated with difficulty. In the railway carriage another skirmish took place between the women, hut they were Bgain separated.' Mrs Hansen got at last into such a state of excitement that at the entrance to the Domain tunnel she made a dash to open the door of the carriage in order to throw herself between the carriages, exclaiming, " Anywhere out ot the world." Sergetnt Green, however, succeeded in cli'tching hertlr«»« before sh« could effect her purpose, »nd secured her safely for-the;rest ot th» journey. On arrival at the police statiea Mrs Hansen wished to remain at the door of hi-r husband's cell, » n <l ns "be threatened to commit suioidsif sent away the police looked her up. Hansen i*.by no menns an Adions, but both women are good looking. Hans Peter Hansen, b; ought up from Nelson, was on Tuesday chaiged wi4h wife desertion, and remanded till Saturday. Mrs Hansen, who had iittetnpied suicide through gridf and ■jealousy was discharged.
