COMMERCIAL.
DUNEDIN MARKETS. Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., report for the week ending April 16 as follows :
Grain. —Wheat : In this market there is hut little doing. The millers are the only purchasers, and they continue to pursue their ‘ hand-to-mouth ’ policy of buying. During l the week we have placed about 10,000 bushels at quotations. We quote piime milling wheat at 3s lOd per bushel; ordinary, 3s fid to 3s 9d ; soft, 2s 9d to 3s 3d ; and fowls’ wheat from 2s to 2s 9d (bags included). Oats : A fair demand exists for prime milling and bright short feed oats. Of these descriptions we have sold several thousand bushels during the week ; prime milling at 2s 2d per bushel, and best bright short feed at from 2s Id to 2s l|d; bright Danish oats, 2s (bags in). Discolored oats are somewhat difficult to place. Barley : There are a good many lots offering now, but owing to the high price asked by vendors, but few transactions have taken place. We quote prime malting at 6s per bushel, extra choice a shade more.
Mr L. Maclean, under arrangements with the British and New Zealand Mortgage and Agency Company, Limited, reports for the week ending April 9 as follows :
Fat Cattle.—The number yarded to-day was 158 head, a large portion of which were of ordinary quality, and prices were about equal to last week’s rates. Best bullocks brought from £8 to £8 30s ; others, £6 to £7 10s ; cows, up to £8 15s. We quote prime beef from 17s fid to 20s per 100 lbs. Fat Calves-16s to 295.
Fat Sheep.—2ls2 were penned for to-day’s market, 360 of which were merinos. N early the whole penned of both crossbreds and merinos were from good to prime quality. Best crossbreds brought from 13s to 16s 9d ; others, from 11s to 12s 6d ; merinos from 9a 9d to 10s 6d. We quote prime mutton from to 2|d per lb. Fat Lambs—From 9s 9d to 12s. Pigs—l 92 yarded and sold from 10s 6d to 70s,
Sheepskins—Dry pelts realised from lOd to Is ; green crossbreds, Is lOd to 2s 2d ;do merinos, Is 7d to 2s Id. I also offered several small lots of wool, which sold at late rates.
Hides,—Light weights, 3d; medium, 3£d to 3£d ; heavy 4d to 4£d, Tallow —Best quality, 32s to 33s ; ordinary, 28s to 29s ; inferior, 20s to 24s ; rough fat, 18s to 22s 6d. Grain. —On account of the Easter holidays there has not been much doing for the last week. Wheat : There is a good demand for prime milling ready for immediate delivery, but most of the samples offering are not in condition, and for which there is little or no demand. I quote prime milling, 3s 9d to 3s lOd ; medium, 3s to 3s 6d ; fowls’ wheat, 2s to 2s 9d —bags weighed in. Oats : —There are|numerons nquiries for milling lots, bnt at present the market is bare. Quotations—2s Id to 2s 3d for prime ; bright feed, Is lid to 2s—including bags. Barley : Prime malting, 4s; medium, 3s 6d to 3s 9d, with few lots offering. Ryegrass. —No sales.
