SOUTH CANTERBURY EDUCATION BOARD.

A special meeting of the Board of Education was hold yestorday, there being present Rev. G. Barclay (Chairman), S. W. Goldsmith, M. Gray, J. Talbot, W. J. Steward, and R. A. Barker.

In reference to the depot question, the Secretary stated that the stock of books, stationary, etc., usually sold to schools, and at present in hand, was worth £IOO, and there was also £6l worth of apparatus, supplied gratis to schools. Two offers wore receired for the purchase of the stock. Mr Steward said it appeared to him that the depot had yielded no advantage to the Board financially, and non* to the School Committees. The profit On two years’ operations seemed to have been £59, and there was now a dead stock in hand of £3O ; but on ths late clerk’s leaving the Board’s service, a bonus of £25 had been voted him for bis exertions in connection with the depot, so that the profit was virtually nil. The matter was discuesad at length, and Mr Gray moved and Mr Talbot seconded—‘That the depot be closed, provided satisfactory arrangements can be made by the Chairman for the sale of the present stock.’ Mr Wakefield moved as an amendment, and Dr Foster seconded—‘ That as the maintenance of the depot entails no lots to She Board, and is of service to the Committees, no action be taken.’ The amendment wa» lost, and the metion wae carried. Mr Talbot moved, in the terms of his notice —‘ That with a view of giving winners

of the Board’s schcUrsM, s a chance of prosecuting their studio, at some High Sc'icol under more favorabl circumsta s than at preset, on account, of the exan ination taking place so late, the eiMtunatiou bo held during the momh of December.’ The Chairman stated that the date of examination had been fixed for March originally because the teachers had urged that if it were fixed for the end of the year they (the teachers) would be far too heavily handicapped, having to prepare their children for the Inspector’s examination, as well as caching their scholarship candidates. The matter was discussed at some length, and the motion was finally withdrawn by the mover.
