Melbourne, Dec. 6. It is now known that Martin Weiberg, the Avoca gold robber, was not drowned at Waratab Buy, as reported a few weeks ago, but is alive, and was a passenger to England by the steamship Sorato, which left here on the Ist inst. Sydney, Dec, G. A telegram was react at the Convention yesterday announcing that France lays claim to the following islands or groups in the Pacific :—New Caledonia, Loyalties, Pines (New Hebrides), Marquesas (eleven islands) ; Societies, Tahiti, Moorea ; Low Archipelago (eighty islands) ; Anstrals, Tubuai, Koito, and Rapa. France is willing that the Leeward Islands near Tahiti should be independent.
