GERALDINE FLAT SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The monthly meeting of the Geraldine Flat School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Thursday, the 29th inst. Present—Messrs Kelman, Rose, Shaw, McShane, McQuillan and South. In the absence of Mr Bell, Mr Shaw was voted to the chair. Letters from the Education Board advising payment of incidentals for the fourth quarter, and instructions as to compiling yearly returns were read and apprsved.
The teacher’s report foi the past month showed the average attendance to have been—Boys, 23 ; Girls, 15 ; Total, 38. Mr McShane proposed, Mr Rose seconded, and it was unanimously agreed to instruct the Chairman to request the Board to sanction the appointment of a pupil teacher, as it was impossible for the master to do full justice to the number of classes, all the standards being represented, while there were two classes below Standard I.
On the motion of Mr Rose, seconded by Mr McQuillan, it was resolved to close the school for the Christmas holidays from Friday, the 21st of December, to Wednesday, January 2nd, 1884.
Tenders for fencing trees in the school ground and repairs to the closets were ordered to be called for, and Messrs Shaw and McShane were appointed a sub-Committee to see the work done.
The following report of the examination of the scholars was read :
“ Report of examination held on Friday, Nov. 16,1883. Teacher, Mr Cook.
“ Nunber on roll, 43; number present at examination, 39 ; number presented in standards, 32 ; average attendance, 37.
“Standard VI : presented 5, passed 5 ; Standard V : presented 1, passed 1 ; Standard IV : presented 7, passed 6 *, Standard 111 : presented 4, passed 3 ; Standard II: presented 8, passed S ; Standard I : presented 7, passed 7 ; Total presented 32, passed 30. Percentage gained, 98.75. Present classification of pupils : - Standard VI : passed 5; Standard V: passed 1,; Standard IV : passed 6 ; Standard III: passed 3 ; Standard II : passed 8 ; Standard I: passed 7 ; below Standards, 11. Total, 43. “ I am very pleased with the work of the pupils of this school. The discipline and behavior are good, the reading is satisfactory, and the writing is carefully supervised. Most of the scholars had two copybooks for my inspection. The needle work included
darning ami pa'cliing, and on the whole it was satisfactory. The other subjects were well presented.” It was resolved—“ That the thanks of the Committee be awarded to the teachers for the high per centage of passes gained, and for the general efficiency of the school, and that they further desire to express their appreciation of the prompt manner in which the ActingInspector (Mr Gurr) forwarded his report, thus enabling the teacher to rearrange his classes without loss of time.” A copy of the above resolution to be sent to the Board, Accounts amounting to £4 Is were passed for, payment and the meeting adjourned to Monday, the 7th of January, 1844.
