CRICKET.

TIMAEG ELEVEN V. GERALDINE ELEVEN.

As an instance showing the estimation in which the Geraldine oval is held by the various Cricket Clubs in the district, the Secretary of the Geraldine Club received two telegrams on Thursday afternoon last, offering to play a match yesterday, the first of which, that of Mr Godby, was accepted. The latter arrived at noon, and shortly after play commenced it was noticeable that the Geraldine boys had a strong picked team to contend against. Owing to the short notice, many of the best of the" Geraldine men were unable to attend, It was a pity the match could not have been arranged for Saturday. However, the best face was put on the matter, and a team was hastily summoned to oppose Timaru. The Geraldine team was captained by Mr Pearpoint, and the Timaru by Mr Godby. Messrs Mackenzie and Willoughly acted as umpires. Geraldine won the toss and sent Bethune and Pearpoint to the wickets. The Geraldine team worked hard, but it seemed fate had decided against them, for some of their best men had to retire without adding much to the score, and their total for the first innings only amounted to 29.

The Tirnaru men then went in, but shortly afterwards an adjournment was made for lunch, the visitors being entertained by their horts at the Crown Hotel, where a cold collation was laid before them in Mr Bowden’s well-known style. On play resuming Dr Pish took Mr Mackenzie’s place as umpire and the result of the innings was 74.
