THE WAR IN THE SOUDAN.
London, Nov. 24 The evacuation of Cairo by Sir Evelyn Wood’s trbops has been postponed, and if El Malidi advances into Egypt it is ex pected that an Anglo-Indian force will be brought together to resist him. At present Egypt is in an unsafe condition beyond the second cataract. It is considered possible that the Porte may demand of the Khedive to restore order in the Soudan. The tone of the'Erench press is iubilant over the disaster in Egypt. J Nov. 26. A force of 20,000 gendarmes, along with 6000 Bedouins will shortly [proceed to Souakim to assist in quelling the rebellion there. Nov. 26. The Arabs report that there is a large army belonging to El Mahdi in close proximity to Khartoum, and that there are only 2000 in the city to protect it. All means of relreat from the town by land have been closed, and the river is also menaced. Steps are being taken to fortify Assonon, a town near the first cataract on the Nile. Baker Pasha (Colonel Valentine Baker) starts for Souakim in ten days. The Turkish officers of the Egyptian Gendarmes refuse to serve in the Soudan, and they and the troops under their command have refused to proceed there. A rising is expected in Qpper Egypt. Cairo, Nov. 26.
Intelligence is to hand from Khartoum, a large town in Upper Nubia, that. El Mahdi, with a great following, is now in close proximity to the place, and has stopped all supplies from entering. It is feared that the rebels are about to attack the town, and the population, numbering nearly fifty thousand, are panic-stricken. Hundreds have a 1 ready fled from their homes.
