The usual monthly meeting of the Gercldine School Committee was held in the Sclioolhouse, on Thursday evening

last. Members Present—• fllessrs A. * Sherratt (Chairman), Mundell, Shiers, C. Sherratt, G. Ward and Dunlop.

MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.

chairman's statement.

The Chairman stated that one of the principal reasons why they had met that night was that he had received a circular from the Inspector of Schools for South Canterbury to the effect that he would visit the school for the purpose o-f examining it on Wednesday next the 31st inst. That was two months before the usual time, and the t>chooi was therefore not prepared for it. It was most unfair to all the teachers. The Waimate and Tirnaru Schools had already passed their twelve months and were not examined yet, while the Geraldine School was only examined too months ago. He had. written the draft of a letter which he suggested should be sent to the Chairman of the Board of Education on the subject which he would read.

The letter was read accordingly. All the members present coincided with the Chairmao that it would be very uufair to all concerned to examine the school in the various tbndard before the usual twelve months were up. Mr Dunlop remarked that he had spoken to the Eev G. Barclay, the Chairman of the Board, about it, who stated thiit the Inspector must havo all the schools examined and the results handed

in to the Board fourteen clear days prior to the annual elections of School Committees. He proposed to go round this district first, taking Flaxburn, Scotsburn, Kaknhu, Geraldine Flat and the other schools, and the Geraldine school was included.

Proposed by Mr Shiers, seconded by Mr Mundell and carried—* That the Chairman acknowledge the receipt of the circular and beg most respectfully to protest against the school being examined two months before the usual time ; it beine most unfair to the .teachers and school generally ; and request the Chairman to forward a letter similar to the one he had drafted to the Chairman of the Board on the subject.' CORRESPONDENCE. ' A letter was read from the Secretary to the Board, in reply to the one sent from the Chairman of the Committee, re extra iusurance of the school buildings when Used for other purposes than religious, political or scholastic. It was to the effect that the Board did not insure the buildings.

;A long conversation on the matter took place,Mr Dnnlop stating that the Government did not insure the public buildings.

Mr C. E. Sherratt considered that if the building was not insured at all. steps should be taken at once to have it done, payment to be made out of the incidental fund.

Proposed by Mr Dnnlop, seconded by Mr Mundell and carried— ( That in event oi the school buildings not being insured by Govsrnment they be at once insured by this Committee for £4OO to (include the furniture therein), in two offices at £2OO each, and that all matters relating to the said insuring be left in the hands of the Chairman and Mr Shiers, : VISITORS* REPORT.

The Visitors' report for the past month stated that on visiting the school they found 187 children present, and that out ofthis number 90 were in the infant room. They recommended several improvements that wanted seeing to at once. Resolved—' That the Chairman and Mr Dunlop see te the repairs needed.' ACCOUNTS. An account for £3 7s for scrapers, gates, etc., was passed for payment. HEAD MASTER'S REPORT.
