THE ANTI-JEWISH RIOTS IN HUNGARY.
For a week past, says the Pall Mall Budget of Angust 17th, Pesth has been like a town in a state of siege. Six battalions of infantry on Friday night took, possession of the eastern quarters, which were shut off from the rest of the city by cordons of military, while troops of cavalry, mounted artillery, and gendarmes patrolled the city. The house doors were closed after seven o'clock and the streets became deseited. In those quarters where fresh excesses were apprehonded circulation without a special permit was not allowed. The garrison off duty was consigned to barracks. Notwithstanding, a rabble assembled in one part of the city on Friday night, broke the windows of several house?, destroyed the street lamps, and ransacked the brandy shops. They also began throwing stones at the patrols, but dispersed as Boon as the soldiers and police charged. Men—and even women^—threw 6tones from the wiudows of some of the houses, and numerous persons were wounded. A large number of the rioters were arrested. On Saturday night the alerte was given several times, and here and there partial excesses took place. In one instance shots were exchanged between some police agents and a group they were trying to disperse. Seven young men were arrested, and found to be armed with poignards and loaded sticks. An attempt was made on Sunday evening to renew the disturbances, but the rioters were speedily dispersed. Some shots were, however, fired, and some of the people arrested had daggers and revolvers in their possession, The Jewish community abstained Irom attending the services in the synagogues, although they were of a special character, being held in commemoration of the destruction of Jerusalem. On Monday night, in Pesth, a tumult took place in one of the suburbs, and a. house on the road to New Pesth Was demolished, A Jewish baker had been overcharging the wife of a workman, and the matter being noised abroad a troop of workmen with their wives proceeded to the Jew's residence, broke the windows, and generally wrecked the place. A number of mounted policeman' and infantry marched from Pesth to the scene of the riot and before they could disperse the crowd they had to make use of their weapons, wounding several of the workmen . Fifty arrests were made.
