GERALDINE ROAD BOARD.
The first meeting of the new Board under the ' Road Board Act 1882,' was held in the office on Tuesday, 12th Juno 1883. Present—Messrs Wm. Postlethwaite, John Kelland, Wm. Deßeuzy and Wm. Upton Slack. On the motion of Mr Slack, seconded by Mr Deßenzy, Mr Win. Postlethwaite was elected the Chairman of the Board for the ensuing year. Mr Postlethwaite thanked the members for the honor conferred upon him, after which the minutes of the last ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. TENDERS. The following tenders were opened and considered : i No. 59—Metalling road on Downs : Thomas Cookery, £55 ; F. Dierck, £54 7s 6d (accepted). No. 60—Willow stakes : Joseph Lewis, £9 17s 6d per 100 j Benjamin Trumper, £5 (accepted). CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read and considered : From the Chief Surveyor, Chrislchurch, forwarding a lithogvp.phed copy of the map of the township of Arundel for the information of the Board. -The clerk was instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the same with thanks. From Mr Middleraiss, dated 25th May, informing the Board, that from the lecent heavy rains, his land was inundated with water, streams coming where there was no natural watercourse, thus preventing him from sowing his wheat, and requesting that a drain be cut on the road to carry the water to the natural outlets. From Mr Flatman, on the subject of Mr Middlemiss' letter, asking the Chairman to authorise the Overseer to attend to the drain at once. Resolved—' That the action of the Chairman and Mr Flatman be approved by the Board.' From Mr Joseph Holwell, dated 24th May, asking the Board to place a culvert across the Pleasant Valley road, to take the water off his land. ] Resolvod—' That Mr Kelland and the I Overseer view the place and do what is necessary.' From the Clerk of the Licensing Committee, dated 9th June, upon the subject of Ihe drainage of the township. K'solved—' That the Overseer proceed without delay to drain through Wilson's street towards the unsold portion of the town sections. From Mr Timothy Sugrue; dated 12th June, asking for an extension of time to complete his contract on Peckham's road, owing to the recent bad weather. ' Resolved—' That 21 days' extension be granted.' From Mr Joseph Robinson and others, dated 7th June, requesting the Board to widen and gravel that portion of the road leading from Kennedy's coiner to Fairfield bußh. Resolved—'That the Overseer report upon it.' From Mr John Rice and others, asking
the Board to form and gravel that piece of road leading from Captain Temple's house to the Rhubarb Flat road. Resolved—' That the Overseer report upon the same,' From Mr Bowerbank, dated 29fch May, asking for an extension of time of two months, to complete No. 52 contract in the bush. Resolved—' That one month's extension be granted,' From Messrs Walker and McDougall, dated 11th June, asking the Board to form the road from the limekiln to the main road. Resolved—' That the Board will try to take steps to make the road.' From the Geraldine Connty Council, forwarding a copy of an Act to be submitted to the present session of Parliament to empower the Council to construct waterworks. From Captain Bailey, dated 11th June, requesting tlie Board to shingle the road leading to his gate ; also, re t-vo culverts which require attention. Resolved— 1 That the Overseer report upon the culverts, but regret they cannot shingle the road as requested.' From the agent of the South British Insurance Company, dated Ist June, re insurance of Pound, etc. The same was ordered to be paid. overseer's report. The Overseer's report was read and considered, and the followiug resolutions passed thereon :—(1) The Overseer's action be approved on Hewson's road ; the other side to be formed; (2) The Board approve the Overseer letting drain to Mr A. Reid, re Middlemiss' application; (3) Totara street to be continued as soon as the timber is cleared ; (4) The Board sanction A. McCool,s contract in Baautiful Valley being transferred to Mr F, Molloy ; (5) Slips near Wigley's and Sullivan's to be attended to, and shingle road on Rhubarb Flat; (6) Gould's application for a drain to be attended to ; (7) Rangitata riverbed road to stand over until after the Mount Peel Road Bnard meeting ; (8) No further extension of time to be gmnted in Reed's payment; (9) The Overseer to have the work done near Huffey's ; (10) The Overseer to call for tenders for the delivery of lart?e trees, and have them anchored in the Orari river-bed. interview. Mr J. W. Jones waited oh the Board, re a road to his house. Resolved—' That the Overseer call for tenders for the work.' ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amonnt of £799 16 3d were passed for payment. SANITARY. The Inspector of Nuisances' report was read and the sanitary state of the district was considered good, excepting the township of Geraldine, ADJOURNMENT. The Board then adjourned until Tuesday the 10th day of July at 10 a.m.
