ST. SAVIOUR'S CHURCH SUNDAY SCHOOL.
The annual distribution of prizes to the chiidien attending the above school wns f made last Sunday. Th<re was ft larqe attendance, end after the ordinary business of the school luid been gone through, Mr A. Cox said : Young people: I »m amongst you on this occasion at the invitation of your teachers, with the approval of the clergyman of the parish. You have not forgotten, I hope, that twelve mouths ago I was here taking a prominent part on a similar occasion, viz, at the distribution of prizes to the most Buc3esßful of the scholars attending the school. To come again amongst you ; to see again the faces of friends, old and young, the same teachers, with some additions/and the same children, grown a little older, is very satisfactory to me and a very hopeful feature of the present gathering, for it is clear and positive proof that yoar teachers are still under the influencft of a religious instinct, recognizing their duty towards you and doiDg it—not yet weary of well-doing ;. ready to share with you their knowledge of heavenly things ; and that your parents — your fathers and mothers—and your friends have all confidence in them, be lieving that no child ai tending the Sunday School will be taught anything that a child ought not to know. You are—l hope you know it—under the greatest possible obligation to your teachers. They come here Sunday after Sunday, all the year round, voluntarily performing a work that not all are qualified for, and that care to undertake, devoting their day of rest and recreation to the instruction of Christ's flock. God-feaiing men and women who, knowing by experience the value of religious knowledge, dare not * withhold from the children of Christian parents such knowledge. Try and realize the obligation that tbey have put upon you. Y ou have it now in your power to reward thorn. They will feel sufficiently rewarded by your exertions to benefit by their teaching. Throw yourselves into J'our-work, heart and soul, and you will carry away with you a fund of knowledge and a source of comfort that none can deprive you of. It is natural that children should be cared for. You must never forget that our blessed Lord, when on earth, in answer to those who would 4 have kept back little children frpm coming wk near tp him, used these memorable words, and forbid them not, for of suoh is the Kingdom of Hesvep.' Again ' Wbosoeyer
receiveth not the Kingdom of Heaven as a little child, shall not enter therein.' These words are written on the walls around you. This is your claim to be considered wcrtlry of being included in Christ's flock. Try and realise your privileges. That you and your parents may be quite certain that what you are being taught here is knowledge of the right sort, and by no means ill-taught, let me refer you 1o a instance of successful teaching that has come within my own personal knowledge. A few months a*o you had amongst you a companion and schoolfellow, who haR since been sent to Christ's College, Christchurch. The boy I speak of is well kDown to you all -Joseph Lee. He is, or was rather—for he has been lately promoted to a higher class—first in a form or class numbering 22. In this class the subjects of study were four, viz., English, Latin, Arithmetic aod Divinity, and his place at the examination was No 1, in all four subjects. Now, Divinity is only another name for religious knowledge, and all the public teaching in connection with religion, all the competition in study that he ever encountered before going away from Temuka was provided for and bestowed upon him within these walls. Well, he is introduced into a school consisting of boys furnished by all parts of New Zealand, and has not only held his own, but has come out No 1 in religious acquirements. Now, the school or college that he is a student at is an educational establishment of the highest order, aod what I want you to bear in mind is this, that what the authorities of such a college accept as sound and thorough teaching must be of the right sort. Boys, what one boy has done, any number of boys can and may do, go and do likewise, but remember this, that although any number of you may be the equal in natural ability of my young friend, your classfellow, that success is mainly owing to his habit of steady application. Iu a word he had a turn for work, and if you wish to succeed in life youmust turn to, heart and soul, making the most of your opportunities. Do this aod you will reward and gratify your teachers, and gladden the hearts of your fathers and mothers, and juniors. The prize list was then handed to Mr Cox who distriliuled the prizes to the children. The following is a copy of the list : BOYS. Class I. F. L. Langridge ) -i H. Yovce | W. Ackroyd 2 J. Bryan 3 R.
