TIMARU MARKETS

Messrs Maclean and iStcwart report for the past week ending Saturday as follows : Horses—-The demand for all classes still continues slack, and sales difficult to effect at anything approaching reasonable values. Their entry to day comprised 30 head. Conspicuous among them was a team of 3 magnificent young draughts, the property of Mr Win. Gillespie, but the bidding for these not coming up to their owner’s expectations, they were passed iu unsold. They quote heavy draughts, £35 to £4O ; medium, £l6 to £25 ; hackneys, good sorts, £l4 to £lB ; inferior to medium, £G to £l2 Cattle—Tliere is very little business doing at auction either in fat or store cattle. Three year old store steers are enquired for, but none offering. At Washdyke on Monday last they yarded 145 head, principally young cuttle 'and cows. Competition was very dull, and consequently transactions were few. They quote fat cows £6 to £6 15s; store do, £3 2s 6d to £3 7s 6d ; yearlings, 30s to 355, two year olds, £3 10s to £3 15s. At Winchester on Thursday there was a small entry of cattle and sheep, with almost an entire absence of business, farlners being too busy harvesting to put in an appearance there.

Sheep -There have been no transactions of any importance during the week, but they look forward to a large business being clone immediately after (he crops are in stacks, as the stubble feed in this district is remarkably good this season. At Washdykc on Monday they sold 8i cross-bred ewes at 10s; 123 first cross lambs (small), Gs ; 250 merino ewes, 3s 5d ; 350 merino ewes, aged, 3s.
