MILFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting was held la?fc Monday. Present. —Messrs Cox (Chairman), Woodhead, White, Brogden, Cain, Maze, and Clyne. COBBESPONDENOB. From the Board of notifying payment of salaries for the month of March. From the Head Teacher, Mr Mossman, intimating that ho had been appointed to the Woodend School, in the North Canterbury school district, and expressing a wish to be allowed to leave at once ; and thanking the Committee for the support that he had at all times (received from them in the discharge of his duties.
From the Inspector (to whom the master’s resignation had meanwhile been forwarded; stating that he had
duly advertised fora successor to Mr Mossman in Timaru, Christchurch, and - Dunedin, and that applications would be forwarded to the Chairman on Tuesday March 23rd. The Chairman here stated that he had directed Mr Mossraan’s attention to the Act which requires one month’s notice on the part of the master before leaving, and warned him that so far as the Committee were concerned that requirement would have to be observed, but that if the Board sanctioned his leaving at once the Committee (due provision being made meanwhile for carrying on the school) would not be an obstacle in his way. From the Secretary, informing the Committee that he had heard from Mr Mossman that the school had been, closed for additions and repairs, and that such work would probably extend over two or three weeks, and asking, under the circumstances that he be released at once. The Secretary stated that if the Committee saw no objection Mr Mossman might be allowed to leave, and that if his successor could not take charge when tho school was re-opened that a locum tenens might be appointed. From Mr Mossman, reporting interview with the Secretary as to his leaving at once, and enclosing book showing a balance to credit of Com-? nuttee of 5s 6d ; also, forwarding quarterly returns for the quarter ending March 31st; and pointing out that the average attendance had fallen, off owing to the long continued harvesting i reporting the,t the schoolmaster’s residence is in the same condition as, when ha took possession, with the exception of the plastered rooms, where certain repairs were necessary ; enclos-, ing estimate of repairs of the master’s house, 15s for plastering, and 15s for I locks to doors.
Mr Mossman having left on the 23rfl March, the Committee proceeded to the. consideration of ten applications for the. office of Efead Teacher, recommending, three of the number, out of which a master might be chosen, it being regarded as a sine qua non that the head; teacher should be a married man.
It was resolved—That an entertain-, ment be given with the object of raising funds for school prizes, due notice by. advertisement of the date to be given.
