TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.
The, usual monthly meeting of the. above Board was held last Tuesday. PRESENT. Messrs Talbot (Chairman), Barker, Paterson, Eusor, and Austin, MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were, read and confirmed. correspondence. From Mr Lang-Meason, stating that the. work of painting the Opihi bridge had not been well done, and leaving the Board; to decide whether they would pay the small balance due to the contractor, or. get the work done at ins expense. It was decided to pay the amount due.
From Mr W. Gunn drawing attention, the to necessity of having a road open on North aide of tho Orari river owing to, the land having been sold to various purchasers.
It was decided to call for tenders for the work.
From the Levels Road Board agreeing, to pay a share of the cost of keeping the Opihi Bridge in repair. From Mr Totten calling attention to, the lower ford on the Kangitata creek, I It was resolved that Mr Lewis arrange. I a meeting with Mr Totten ■ surveyor's, report. “ Sir, —I examined Vine street drain. I with,a view of carrying out the Board’s, I instsuctions, boo I thought it better to ■ bring it befoie the Board again, before ■ proceeding in the matter. For partly I filling with, shingle as decided upon at I last meeting would in my opinion increase ■ the nuisance instead of abating it, for. ■ the offensive matter would settle in the. H shingle, as there is not sufficient fall nor H sufficient water at ordinary times to it off, and the shingle filled in as proposed would in a short time have to bo thro <vn H out again for that reason, and so far Vine street is concerned I fail to see the necessity of the drain as a road drain, H and would therefore advise it to be filled up, as it is probable that as the town in- H creases it will be found necessary to form a footpath oyer, the site of the present drain. The drainage of Vine street and other streets connected with it, could be earned down the drains on the op* posita side of the street equally as well, leaving only the necessity of an ordinary side channel, so I would therefore suggest to the Board the advisability of filling up the drain, and forming a light instead of carrying out the work as cided at last meeting. In reference to the creek which Mr Henderson asked have cleared, which I was instructed to spect, and invite tenders for clearing if found it to be damaging theroad. I only say that the creek is the only outlet for the roadside drain, and as said drain runs nearly at right angles
the fall of the land, the water being raised in the creek by the cress onuses the water to stand in the roadside drain for a depth of siy six or eight inches nearly the whole length, thereby encouraging cress and other weeds to grow in them. ] cannot say that the water in the drain is at present damaging the road, therefore I did not feel myself justified in tendering for the work. But still I consider it to be necessary for the general draining of that part of the district, and would ask the Board for further instruction in the matter. In reference to footpaths on the south road, I have inspected the place and would recommend a path as suggested. to be trade on the west side of the road for a distance of about 10 chains from Wheelband’s road, then a pipe across the south road, and the water taken down the road from opposite Wheelband’s, eastwards, into the gully. All hough this is a plan, I do not approve, as it can only be a temporary makeshift. I see no other way of remedying the evil complained of, as the Board have decided not to form footpaths outside the town. X)f course this path can only be looked upon as an jembankment, rendered necessary through the formation of the road. The path on the east side of the road lias not, in my opinion, the same claim for consideration from the Board, as being on the low side of the road, the road cannot be said to have stopped the water courses. There are, of course, other ways of getting rid of the water, but they would be too expensive unless the Board was prepared to follow out some efficient plan.—l have the honor, etc.,
“ T. S. Lewis.”
It was resolved —“ That the Board cannot undertake to do the work applied for by Mr Levens and others at present.” A letter from Mr Thompson was read, complaining of the Vine street drain. Resolved—“ That Mt Thompson be informed .that the Board purpose to raise the bottpra of ; the drain with a view of improving the fall, and in the event of .this not being effectual the drain will be probably filled up altogether.” BATES On the motion of Mr Barker, it was resolved —“That this Bm.rd will at its next meeting strike a rate of 6d in the £ on all rateable property in the district,” and the Clerk was instructed to prepare a rate-book.
