FIRES.

Last Monday evening a fire destroyed LIOO,OOO worth of property at Gisborne. The fire broke out in Messrs Graham an 1 Co.'s (wine merchants) offices, and destroyed the Union Company's office, the bonded store of Messrs Clark and Sou, Messrs Pitt and Bennett's auction mart. Union Bank, McFarlaue's Hall, Messrs Brassey and Eraser's offices, and the Argyle Hotel. Had there been the slightest breeze blowing the whole town would have been burned down. The losses by the various Insurance Companies are as follows :—South British, L 1750 ; Victoria, L2OOO ; Union. L 5175 ; Colonial, L2OOO ; North British. L 2625 j National, L 3150 ; Norwich Union, L 1250 ; Standard, LllOO ; Royal, LI 100 ; New Zealand,. L 205.0 ; grand total, L 22,000, The Ashburton Guardian of Monday says ;—A fire occurred at Mr Lyttelton's Rokeby estate on Saturday night, :>t about nine o'clock, destroying bis men's, house, a building 40 by 20,, There was no one living in it at the time, his men being away harvesting. The origin of the fire is unknown. There was. no insurance. This gentleman had two, reapei's wilfully damaged about a wpp\ ago. No positive evidence as to who were the perpatrators of the dastardly act has yet come to light, but it is believed the police have a clue.
