NEW ZEALAND COAL FOR THE RAILWAYS.
In our last issue we mentioned that the contract for the supply of coal to the Wellington-Masterton railway had been secured by Captain Williams, on behalf of the Coal Pit Heath Company, the price being 28s lid per ton. We are glad to state further that -khe contracts for the coal supply of all the New Zealand railways have been secured by New Zealand coal proprietors, and at moderate prices, being, with one exception, all below 80s per ton The result is that , nothing but New Zealand coal will be used on our 1800 miles of railway during the current year. This should give ; a valuable stimulus to the coal industry, one of the most important that a country, can possess. It should encourage further efforts in the opening up of new ir mines, and in the development of those already being worked. The great hope ' for New Zealand in the future is in the establishment and extension ofindustrial enterprises which afford abundant employment, beside substantially augmenting the wealth of the community. We ( are very pleased, therefore, to find the Now Zealand collieries already able to supply the New Zealand railways, as well as steamers, at prices which justify the use of the local product in preference to importation.—Evening Post.
