CONDEMNED TO DEATH.
Ah Quee, the Chinaman, who was sentenced to death at Cooktown, for the murder of two of his'fellow-countryraen, has suffered the extreme penalty of the law at Brisbane gaol, says the Brisbane Observer. The condemned man had previous to his death been visited by the Chinese missionary, Ah Chee, but no signs of repentance appear to have been shown, and the missionary was not present at the-execution.. The convict walked from the cell to the scaffold with a firm step, and did not appear to realise his position until the white cap was drawn over his head.. He then commenced to mutter a few words of prayer, and continued until the drop fell. Death was instantaneous. This is the first execution that has occurred within the Brisbane gaol precincts during the present year. Last year there were no less than five condemned men hanged in Brisbane. It is probable that the present hideous scaffold used : for the purpose of executions will be dispensed with when the removal of the gaol has been completed. No he'll was tolled during the carrying out of the sentence
of death, and there were only a few stragglers outside the gaol mostly l&rrikiiis.
