TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of the Board ' was held on Tuesday last. MEMBERS PRESENT Messrs Tt'lbot (Chairman), Barker, and Patterson, MINUTES. The minutes of. the previous meeting wore read and confirmed*. OHHI BRII/OE CONTRACT; A letter wna read, from Mr ; Stringer, Solicitor, Chiistchnrch,. applying, on behalf of'Messrs Thomas and Hill,, contractors for the Opihi Bridge, foe th» sum of

£383 16s 6d. made up as follows : Balance due under contract, £292 Bs ; value of timber supplied for purpose of protective works not carried out by Biia.nl, as per certificate of the dork o< the Works. 8734fc at. 18s per lOOt't, £7B lis ;do do fi.r ironwork Units. XOoOlbs at 3d. £l3 2s 6d ; total. £383 16s, 6d. Mr S< ringer intimated that unless, the amount was paid without delay legal, proceedings would be-taken, to recover the .same.

The Chairman stated that on receipt of the above he had authorised Mr Meason the engineer tor tlu Opihi Bridie, to get Mfcssrt White and Jameson's, opinion on the matter. He would, lay the oxiinioii before the Board.

The following resolution proposed by Mr Barker, and seconded by Mr Paterson, was. carried —' That a cheque be handed to the Board's solicitor- fur £27.2 3s, being £2O less than, the-full contract pti-e, and together with deposit; the said. £2O being retained to carry out some small items of maintenance as per contract. The value of the limber as per the Board's offer of last meeting to be made up, and the amount, together with any unexpended balance of the £2O, to be then paid to the contractors ; also, the timber supplied by the B'.ard to be chaigcd when tin; account is finally made up. The Board's solicitor to be asked to forward the cheque and to inform toe contractors of the Board's decision." The Chairman laid before the Board a matter in counts' tio'.i with the tarring and painting of the Opihi Bridge. It was decided to pay certain orde"s, so that the workmen employed wou'd be paid. DEPUTATIONS. Messrs Ackcoyd' and Quinn bad an interview with the Board in reference to road to their property recently purchased by the Board, from Mr Rhodes. Mr Burke, the tenant of the land, required £2l as compensation, being at the rate of £3 a year for seven years, that being the time his tenure exists. After cart-fully considering the matter, the Board decided to pay £l6 Mr Wheelband interviewed the Board, asking for the formation of a piece of road from the u a ,w bridge near Mr Burrows, a distance of three or four chains. Re-olved—'' That tenders be called for the work." Mr Lawson had an interview with the Board, asking for advice ia regard to impounding cattle off the railway reserves at Temuka and Winchester It was decided to write to the ra.il.way authorities asking for leave to impound off the railway reserves, at Temuka and Winchester. Mr Thomas, of the firm of Messrs Thomas and Hill,, interviewed the Board in reference to the monetary dispute between Ins arm aud the Board. Nothing, however, came of the same. From Messrs Miles and Co., Christchurch as agents for Mr R. H. Rhodes, acknowledging receipt of plan of, road required by the Board along the western side of rural section 4323, and stating that Mr Rhodes' price is £lB per acre, the Board to do ad necessary fencing to the satisfaction of the tenant, Mr A. Cox, whose consent it will also bo necessary to obtain. This was for a road: from, Mil ford lagoon road to, the Rangitata, applied for some time since. The offer was accepted* To be dedicated to the Board at once. From Mr Empson, withdrawing, his resignation as a member of the Board till after that meeting. Withdrawal granted. From the Treasury office, Wellington, intimating that the sum of £203 10s lid being subsidy of 10s in the £on general j rates received by the Board during the J year ended 31st March, 1881, had been posted to the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka. From Messrs Petry and Perry, demanding payment on behalf of Mr Thomas Roberts, of the sum of £6B 3s alleged to be due to him by the Board for services rendered, The letter was referred:to Messrs White and </ameson. Mr Ensor here took his seat on the Board; A statement was laid on the table in regard to the cost of Mr Cox's drain, to- ; gether with proportion due by certain persons on 25 per cent on total cost. It was decided to forward same to Messrs Rolleston, Greenaway,. Macdonnld and Cox, aDd request them, to pay at once. From the Clerk to the Geraldine County Council, acknowledging receipt of tesoluv tion passed re Mr Roberts' claim and enclosing resolution passed by the Council endorsing the action of the Board in the matter. From the same, enclosing copies of two letters received, one from tiie Colonial Secretary, and the other from the Treasury, in reply to application, made by the Council on behalf of the Temuka and Garnldine Road Boards for their thirds proceeds'of sale reserves in the Geraldine County. The latter letter, stated that reserves 349 and 1650 are within the boundaries of the Geraldine Road Board, ' and the thirds payable have been credited to that Road Board. The Geraldine Ro?>d Board, to be written to requesting thai the Board would pay over a share of. the proceods of the sa' «'of the reserve*. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £593 vera i paiood for payment.

The Overseer's Report was read, and the following resolutions, passed thereon:— Tenders to be called for making the Upper Swamp Road available for traffic ; also fir alternate teoders for cutting another drain and filling in the old one. Re the Sod Town Creek, also the drain, on the west side of the Upper Swamp r ; oad and the canal reserve drain from, theMidd,e Swamp Ro*d to Marshall's, RpafL. This work or as much as is practicable to, be let to the unemployed at a price which the surveyor; deems fair contract prices. The Surveyor was authprised to see \ Jeremiah Flav.e, for amount of dishonored, deposit cheque. VENDERS. The following t.nders for works were Opened : No. 36 Re-Forming Grant's Road. J.
