NATIVE AFFAIRS.
TheTemuka and other Canterbury contingents, who have been the sole occupants of the Volunteer Camps, since the departure of the Wellington men, marched to Opunake on Thursday last where they w ere to await the arrival of the Hinemoa from Mauukau, to bring them down to Lyttelton. All the Volunteers left Pungarehu yesterday before noon. At 9 a.m. on Thursday, the 376 NgatiV was who were taken into custody ou the previous day were marched from Fort Robesfon down to the fence near the camp and shortly afterwards they were started for New ‘Plymouth under an escort of the AC., the women leading and the men taking the rear. Drays were provided to convey their children and the old men and women were also allowed to ride. On arrival at New Plymouth a special train will be ready to take them on to Waitara. As the prisoners reached the bill in front at Punhakn they danced a liaka and bade farewell to the natives in the pah. The old warrior, Titokawaru is still in custody and will be kept at Pungarehu for some time. The Constabulary will probably be garrisoned in the Pungarehu district for the next two years, the principal positions being at Parihafca, Opnnake and Manaia ; while a small number of men will be stationed at other camps. About 26 Taranaki Mounted Rifles are scouring the Waitara and northern Maori settlements for the purpose of searching for firearms. All they find will be impounded, so that the natives throughout the district w/\\(be thoroughly disarmed. ' r/e is proposed to have an address of thanks to the Volunteers drawn up and handsomely and each member who assisted in the demonstration will be presented with a copy. Kereopa, another murderer, for whom sea‘ eh had been made for some time, was captured yesievday and sent the Parihaka c rap. About 800 Mao vies in all have now' been taken out of the pah, and there are more than that number still left in it.
Everything else is quiet.
