HOW HE ESCAPED THE BRIGANDS.

The br'gands of Thessaly have vowed eternal vengeance upon the person and descendants of a naturalised British subject named Janni Boyardji by name, who recently played a very pretty trick upon two of their number. Having fallen into their hands he was offered hia liberty upon the prompt payment of 200 liras. He made no objection to their demand, but told them bo bad not the money about him, adding that if they would be good enougbh to accompany him to a small retired village, they should at onee be paid ; and in order to save them the fatigue and danger of discovery involved by going on foot, he offered to take them to the place he named in his boat, which was net far off. The brigands graciously acquiesced in the arrangement, and the four accordingly stepped into the boat and set off together. When at some little distance from the shore the wily Boyardji managed to upset the boat and stvam ashore with his man, who was as good a swimmer as himself, leaving the two brifiands to reach the shore as best the could. They were both drowned ; and Janni Boyardji has applied to the British Vice-consul for protection.
