MASTERS REPORT

The head master reported as follows ; Number on roll, boys 189, girls 177 ; total 366; Average attendance, boys 114.4, girls 95.4, total 208.8 ; highest attendance during the month, boys 120, girls 108» total 228 The • school,re-opened to-day (Monday, 12th inst.), whe) the following numbers were in attendance : —Boys 109, girls 97 ; total 206 : ' v *

ACCOUNTS

The following accounts were passed for payment :—G. Bolton, £3 5s lid ; Davis, £4; E. Rrown, £5 14s 6d An account from R. W. Hutton for £l3 lis lid wa 8 held over until after the concert. In reference to this account Mr Gray moved, and Mr Hooper seconded, •" That the secretary be instructed to draw the attention of the Master to a former resolution of the Committee that all nccessaiy articles ordered by him be embodied in his report

In reference to bringing the compulsory clause of the Act into force, Mr Gray moved—" That th" Board's letter be acknowledged, and that the secretary inform them that the Committee had themselves taken action iii the matter" The motion was seconded by MrHarrop, and carried

The sub-committee appointed consisting of the Chairman aud Mr Brown, to estimate the cost of fencing in the School Reserve, stated that £29 would be sufficient to oover the expense

Mr Gray brought before the notice of the Committee the fact that children under the age prescribed by the Ace were in the habit of attending school He had frequently seen children of from three to four years old attending school, and argued that the average attendance was fictitious He fancied that parents were under the idea that the school was a large nursery, and he would move "That the master reject all children under the age defined by the Act Mr Hooper seconded the motion, aud it was carried unanimously

Mr Gray also reported that numerous complaints had been made to him of the misconduct of some of ths boys during play -hours, and gave some instances which were borne out by other members of (Joinmitte

Mr Russell said the boys had been repeatedly corrected by the master Mr Gray said that the master not unfrequently corrected the wrong boys Mr Hooper said he should like a full investigation into the matter, as it was necessary that such occurrences should be prevented at any cost

Mr Story supported Mr Hooper's views; he had noticed boys who had been to school with their clothes all torn and soiled, and he would move—'• That Mr Mcintosh be written to and requested to exercise the strictest scrutiny over the larger boys during play hours, and to use every lawful punishment to subdue the bullying conduct of senior boys over the younger, and to take strict measures to prevent and suppress all lewd and immoral conduct" The motion wa» seconded and carried

Messrs .Wilson and Hooper were ap? pointed a visiting Committee fqr t,he ensuing month

A vote of thanks to the Chairman terminated the meeting.
