MILFORD SCHOOL COMMITTEE
Only two members of the Committee attending on the Bfch inst, the monthly meeting was postponed to the 12th, when the Committee met at the usual hour
Present—Messrs Cox (Chairman), Woodhead, Woodleigh, Brogden, and May Upon the minutes being read, a question as to the interpretation of the word " householder" being raised, and he further question as to whether one not an householder eould legally act as a member of Committee. A reference to the Education Act revealed that "an occupier of any building in any district or any parent or guardian, who is liable to •maintain, or has the actual custody of any child, is for the purposes of the Act regarded as. an * householder,' " and therefore eligible to serve as a member of Committee The minutes were then confirmed
To fill up the vacancy in the Committee, created by the retirement of Mr White, Mr Colyjlje was proposed unci unanimously elected
The following correspondence was then read:
1. Circular letter from the Beard, cno*.psing '.' Standard Certificates " for distribution among the spholars attending j:ho school, to be fillpd in accp,rd}i]g fo \\\ standard schedule forwarded with the Inspector's report on the last annual examination
2. From the Board relating to the " compulsory clauses. " of the Act stating that the Board's solicitors had advised t.iat the Act allows the power of summoning defaulting parents, \% be delegated to any duly appointed person, outside the Committee ; and that the Board, at the request of the Committee, is prepared to take upon itself the responsibility of summoning such defaulters.

4 From the Board intimating that the Government had established a "Deaf and Dumb Institute" at Sumner, near Christchurch, and inviting the Committee, if any case likely to be tenifited by a course of training in such institution 6hould come under their notice, to communioate with the Board.
5 Letter from Mr Craig, in reference to complaint of Martin Dunn, as to punishment of his boy. The Chairman was instructed to forward to Mr Dunn the said letter, and to inform him that inquiry would be made re statements contained therein, and the result laid before the Committee at its next meet -
6 Letter enclosing the amount to pay Teachers salaries, (£l4, 10s 4d) for month Of June,
for a drilling and dancing class. Agreed to. Accounts submitted and passed, and ordered
7 Mr Woodhead asked for the use 0 the sohool room one night, during the to be paid—Job Brown, £2 2s od ; J, B' Craig, £1 I3s 3d. The Chairman reported that having in spected the quick fence bounding the northeast side of the school ground, he could no fc report that such fence had received any serious damage from horses or other animals cropping it. At present, it would seem to stand in negd'of trimming.
