Sir, —As regards Mr Braddick's application for a bridge over the Rangitira Crock I have inspected, the place. The creek is at present xinpas3able, andja bridge'would be a convenience to Mr Braddick, but beyond that I do not think it is required at present The cost would probably be about £2OO " The Board decided ,that the erection of this bridge could not bo ontertained I inspected the foot bridgo, near Neall's The river had, when, I saw. it, scourod away about 12 feet past the foot of the approach on the west side I would riot recommend the Board to go to much expense over it at present, for to try to confine the water at ordinary times to tbo width of the bi'idge would, I think, very possibly be the moans of causing a new channel to be scoured .out clear of the bridge altogether ThoJßoa'rd nught try the effect of driving a few; gas pipes with the day men, and if that did not answer, I am-afraid sooner or lator, ; tjbp b.rid-:e • will have to be lengthened

', Resolved that the Government be asked for leave to allow a few planks to bo laid on the railway bridge, at Neal's, for the purpose of using it as a foot-bridge I think, as regards the foot bridge on Mr McPherson's road that it may bo protected, and tho water, thrown under the bridgo by putting out somo protection work a short distance above the bridge, and a fresh channel scooped out to give; the water a start The cost,, would j>robably be about £4O ' . Consideration deferred for the present. '' . In the matter of the footbridge over the Kakuhu, near Sharp's. If such a bridgo, as suggested by the Board, be built, it would require to bo about 80-feet long, and woidd probably cost-about £3O Bridge granted, piovidcd the Geraldino Board share the cost Tho cukerfc opposite Scott*B, on tho'Upper Swamp Road, is washed out, and the road impassable I have sent an advertisement to that effect, and instructed the day men to fence across the road, and would ask the Board's instructions as to having a bridge built Resolved that tenders becallecl for a bridgo at once '

: Tenders have been invited; for the .various works; ordered by the Board at its last meeting, also for. \a bridgeion the Waifcbhi Road,' near McCabes ". .. ",*'''

EEPORT ON" "STEWART'S ,-BOADv CONTRACT, . s>■ Temuka y Ju1y.25,183.0 To Chairman and'- members of the Tetimka ~ • Eoad Board, , .- Gentlemen, —In accordance, with resolu" tions passed at the June-meeting of the Board I obtained from Mr Wills specifications of contract No 6, claying Stewart's road, by Messrs Butler and Devanp. : . ...

On reading specifications, I found that the Board had provided a man to count and spread the loads of. clay—about • 300 cubic yards —as cart ed on said road I waited on the overseer f6r information, but all I obtained from him was as near as. he could describe the situation of the' work, arid .that clay had' been obtained 'by enlarging'tlio ditch on the east side of said road '. -* " \,

On arrival I found I*,had very poor Lata to work upon, and on information received from Nr Stewart I found it would be necessary for me to, be familiar with specifications for the origmatconte^^ ascertain the size of ditc]i,;;etc,.contained in the same, I have since ;obtained' such necessary notes as would assist me After careful-' work ing out,. I. have- arrived, at r the following results :—, ;..'■■•

Ditch as at present (since enlarging), sft lhv top average width ; 3ft sin, ditto bottom : If t ' lOin doptuby 924, length ; 266yds 17ft cubic j ditch prior to removal of clay; 2ft 6in average width, lft 4in ditto .depth,, I4chns—924 . feejf —ll4ydß 2ft cubic, which,, subtracted from; tho abovo leaves 152yds 15ffc clay removed This I find- spread on the following: — Superficial area, 525 chains—346ft 6in x 18ft Gin width—64lo ft' 6in ; 1-00—6fr0 x 9—594 ft Total, 7004 square fo'et, wTji'cli at an averago' depth of 7m would represent 151yds Bft cubic Although traffic on part of the above men tioned section of road has rendered-it impossible toarrivo at the exact quantity deposited yot there are sufficient grounds to enable me t Q ptatewith confidencethat it did not. exceed an average depth of 7in I must'here: mention that-prior to-road being formed, a two-sod ditch, had been.cut on road to form'a bank for'post arid rail fence. This.ditch having, become -'.in-, bluded in tho present one, has rendered it much riicYe difficult' 1 for'me 'to arrive at'tlio' quantities lately removed ; my principal guide s a small section of ditch at "north end of which has not been enlarged, but-re-mains in its original state. Trusting that'the above notes may meet your requirements,—rl am etc., . -Edward thomas butlers lettbr, The Chairman of the Temuka "Road Board Dear Sib,—As regards to< stat-omeit which Mr'Bisset gavo you about me, allow me to correct it, viz., Mr Bisset stated that I com' monced on March 25th, but. I commenced on March the 22nd, and finished on March the 27th I had some tunes three drays at work,— lam etc , ' ' ' . Thomas Butler
