The Temuka Leader. WEDNESDAY, JUNE 11, 1879.

Shooting.—A pigeon match will be held at Temuka in one of Mr B. Thomson’s paddocks, to-morrow, and as there are no scarcity of birds, and most of the local cracks will bo present, we expect to see some good work. Tehuka River Bridge.—-We beg to remind contractors that tenders for the above bridge must be sent in to the Hon. (be Minister for Public 'Works, at (he Public Works Office, Dunedin, by Monday next, June 16th. Bor fuller particulars see advertisement in another column.

Entertainment.—On Friday cTcning lasi, a second entertainment was given in the schoolroom, "Winchester, in aid of the funds of the local cricket club. The attendance v/as not very good, but nevertheless all present seemed to thoroughly enjoy thorascl vcs_ A dance followed the concert. We are glad to sec the residents of Winchester take such an active interest by supporting in this way their cricket club, and hope that the residents of this town will follow their example, as we feel confident a concert on behalf of the funds of our cricket club would bo an immense success.

Presbyterian Church. —The Rev Mr Gillies will preach, in the Presbyterian Church, Temuka, on Sabbath next, 15th instant —in the forenoon at Tl a.m., and in the evening, at G. 30 p.m. The ■Sacrament of the Supper-will be dispensed after ..the forenoon’s service. Mr Gillies will be in the vestry on Saturday evening, at G. 30, to receive certificates from new communicants, or to consult witlr-otlicrs.

Concrete Oijijvert.—A standing nuisance 'ls about to be removed. A concrete culvert is about to he placet! in that deep rut which connects the Main South Road with Com-merce-street. As the latter street is the leading thoroughfare to the railway station, it is necessarily subject to heavy traffic, and often danger was imminent from the deep rut that was formed by the same. It will be a great improvement to have this culvert put down. Our streets have also undergone an overhaul and the mud carted away, so that pedestrians can now go out at night with soiffifdegreo of safety. ; #'Temuka School Committee.—The usual meeting of the Temuka School Committee was held last evening. Present —Messrs Wilson (chairman), Wills, Storey, Hooper, Gray, Russell, and Brown. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education in reference to the expenditure for black boards, also re fencing, also re bell, also re examination of school, also re election of member for the Board. A letter was received from Mr Bolton, caretaker, asking for an increase of salary, also re appointment of a second master. Four candidates applied, to wit Mr W. A. Crawford, Mr E. Smith, Mr J. Baguely, and Mr McCudden. Testimonials were received from the Board of Education, sent to them by the various candidates, and requesting that the Committee consider tee same and submit their recommendation of any of the candidates to the Board, when it will consider the same. The secretary read the several applications, carefully considered the same, when a vote being taken it was found that Mr E. Smith was neai’ly unanimously elected. Proposed by Mr Wills, seconded by Mr Storey, that .the application of Mr Bolton for an advance of salary be nob entertained. Carried. The (secretary was instructed to forward the vouchers for fencing, blackboard, &c., to the Board, A report of the Visiting Members was read, and a copy of the same forwarded to the Board. v ■
