At aConservative faceting at Bury, the First Lord of the Admiralty absolutely denied that there was any difference of opinion between the British and French Governments in reference to the Egyptian question. He cpndenmed the action of the Khedive, but England and France were resolved, notwithstanding, to act quietly and safely; without preparation. News from thb Cape to March 19th states that Cetewayo ' hud made proposals for peace, but that negotiations have failed in consequence ,of the refusal by the British authorities ’ of any terries hut an unconditional surrender. It is believed that Cetewayo and his whole force are at Lower Tuguela. Prices in the wool market are well sustained. 9982 bales -were quitted today. The latest news from the Cape reports that Cetewayo sent leading chiefs asking for peace, and admitting that many of the youngest and bravest warriors had fallen. Negotiations are now proceeding. Lord Chelmsford considers the war is virtually finished. Soboieff was executed on Saturday. The leaders of political parties are active in England in view of the approaching elections. The Liberals are confident of success, owing to Mr Gladstone’s resolute'attitude. I | Lord Derby lifts withdrawn from the Conservatives. / \ Applications for space in the Australian Exhibitions from American exhibitors far exceed the space available. Lord Loftus, the new Gouernor of New South Wales, started on the sth, via Africa, having been officially detained.
AUSTRALIAN NEWS. Melbourne, June 9. Disgraceful rumors are circulated respecting the financial pasition of James MfiEwen and Co., wholesale ironmongers. They are utterly without foundation, and the firm publicly contradicts them. The depositors in the Australian and European Bank have agreed not to remove the balance of current accounts within a certhin time. The investigation of the Bank’s affairs is satisfactory. £30,000 will, fully cover an}' probable losses. A call of £l, in two instalments, payable in July and August, will be made. The Provincial Bankinvestigation shows that the assets will realise £15,000 to £20,000 more than was estimated. The call cf £1 at present is to assist in covering the liabilities. It was resolved to wind up voluntarily. Sydney, June 9. It is rumored that the Newcastle colliers are likefy to abandon the new system. -f I Twenty thousand persons yesterday made a demonstration against the execution lor rape, and thirty thousand are going in procession to Government House to demand a reprieve. The excitement is great.
