TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

A meeting of the Board was held yesterday. Present ; Messrs Talbot (chairman), Quinn, Barker, Havhnrst.andEnsor. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Mr White waited on the Board asking for a drain to be lowered, as water running from the road injured a paddock of his. The Surveyor stated that the work was already in hand. Messrs Stewart and Bissctt waited on the Board and presented a petition signed by several ratepayers, asking t l ’e Board to open up a road through sections 9078 and 6864, belonging to Messrs Stewart Gladstone, so as to give a direct line from Rangitata to Winchester. The petition set "forth that the road prayed for would give a direct outlet to a number of settlers for a distance of five miles, and would also allow a number of children to get to school who cannot now do so. Mr Stewart offered to sell the land for the road, so far as it would run through his laud, at a reasonable rate. It appeared from an inspection of the map and the statements of the petitioners that the road applied for was really needed, and therefore the Board accepted the petition, and resolved to take steps to procure the land required for the purpose. Accounts to the amount o c £2696 3s 5d were then read and passed for payment.

The following correspondence was read ;

From Ca'eb Woodley, asking for two pipe culverts, one 9 and the other 18 inch to be put down in road running near section 11557. Application granted, overseer to arrange witli applicant re labour. FromM. Dunn, asking for an extension of five weeks to finish one of his contracts. His having been required to do extra work was considered a sufficient reason for granting applicant’s request, shortened to four weeks. From Boyd Thompson, asking permission to erect a verandah in front, of his

shop on the Main South _ Ap* plication granted under usual conditions. From Mr Jameson, st.ting that he •would, on. behalf of Mr White, meet the members JBonrd to with them Mr Frank’s claim. The Chairman stated that Mr Jameson had accordingly been to'Tciuuka, and had collected certain evidence required in preparing a defence against the claim. Fiom the Secretary to the Treasury, Wellington, advising of the transmission of the sum of L 2134 14s lOd to the credit of the Board’s account. From Messrs Lyon and Harrop, asking _ to have their names placed on the mil, vice , that of Mr J. Gall, whose late 1 premises they have taken. Messrs Lyon and Harrop to be informed that both names cannot be inserted, and to be asked which name they will have inserted. seqmntly Mr Harrop’s name 'was led. . .. . ... From Mr Turner, Steward of Reserves, asking for a copy of map of the road, district. Mr Turner to be informed the Board is about to obtain a New map, and that the Board will be happy to supply a copy as soon as it shall have been lithographed. A copy of the old map to be sent in the meantime. From the Treasury. Wellington, and :, the Bank of New Zealand, Temuka, re the payment to the Board’s credit of the sum of L 603 3s, being the amount of subsidy payable on general ra'es collected to certain date at 10s in the L. From Messrs Thornton and Bull, ad- . vising the transmission of the new map of the dislrict, in six sheets, with the signature of the chief surveyor attached to each. Two contractors, Messrs Ormond and Wear, waited on the Board to ascertain why their cheques for progress payments applied for were withheld. It was explained that the cheques were only held until the surveyor could inspect the work done. Mr Barker proposed that a return be prepared, show ing what rates remain unpaid since last year, giving name, amount, and reason for the non-collection in each case. Agreed to. Mr J. Brown having complained that the formation of Davie street, though promised, was not taken, in hand, the surveyor explained that be had not called for tenders for the work because the Board had decided by resolution not to undertake any work not of immediate importance. Resolved, “That Mr Brown be informed that through a misunderstanding . t nders had not been called for the work, but that tenders should be called for n ‘xt Board day.” Resolved, ‘‘ That a'l outstanding rents of cottages be recovered by De •, 31st.” Resolved, ‘‘That the undecked portion of the Opihi bridge be attended to at (Sfl-e.” Resolved, “ That the Canal Reserve from corner of section 11,358 to Mr Barker’s bridge be cleared.’. Mr Barker asked for certain information re gravel pit near Loe’s 0 erk to obtain .-same by referring to old minutebooks by next Board da} 7 . Mr Cox applied for a rough tiral er • culvert to be put over Roileston’s dr .in. Application grant d. Mr B .rkerask. d why no steps had as yet been l iken for extending the Lagi on road through Rivevdea and the ' properly, as agreed on at a former meet- ' ing, and proposed that the consent : of the landowners t!trough whose unjL , perfy the road will pass be rmeured. nwj—that all nee sary stops he then taken for * dedication o’ the road. It was resolved to approve of the overseer’s action in condemning certain of the heavy timber reccL ed from Oxford. Mr WiTs resignation of the office of clerk w s received and read Mr Wills st ted tlier in tlmt the manner in which his resigliation was demanded seemed to imply a censure upon him, a censure he thought he was undeserving of. A conversation took place on this passage, a 1! the members declaiming any intention of censuring Mr Wills, and Mr Hay hurst expressed his opinion that nnd r all the circumstances Mr Wills ought not to have written as be bad done. Mr Ensor proposed, Mr Quinn seconded, and the resolution was carried That this Board have been entirely satisfied with Mr Wilds conduct of their business during his term of office, and that lie was requested to resign for no other reason than to facilitate the re-adjustment of duties.” Tenders for works were opened as follows : For contract 126 : J. Blythe, L 275. This was considered too high, and was not accepted. For Contract No. 127 : J. Radford, £l9O, accepted ; Carter and Co, £195. For Contract 128 ; J. Blythe, with timber decking, LI6O ; with concrete arch, £l5O, the Board to find cement. Accepted. For Contract No. 129, laying 12-inch . pipes through about 20 chains of the town drain, Temuka, and correcting levels of drain : M. Flaherty, 17s 6d per chain, accepted. There were three other tenders. Tenders for compiling a valuation roll were received from C. E. Sherratt, L 56 (accepted); G. Dyson, if notices served personally, £llO ; if notices may be posted, £BO A short discussion took place on the advisability of having the new map litho- . graphed. It was resolved not to have this done, as the expense would be too great, but to have the original copy mounted, and kept for the use of th'r B.»ard and their officer. The Board then adjourned.
