THHI AFGHAN WAR. London, November .28. A letter from the Duke of Argyll states that the Gladstone Government refused the proposals of the Ameer of Afghanistan because he asked for an offensive and defensive alliance against internal and external foes. Russia threatens to intervene between England and Afghanistan because Quettah is occupied. The British advance is unchecked, Kautfmann urges on the part of Russia " a demand that England shall not permanently hold the Khyber Pass. - November 29. The Ameer rf Afghanistan is concen-r trating his troops near Cabul, wliich. he has strongly entrenched. , :
Novemb-r 30. The Afreedis attacked a sigmi.ling parly in the Khyher Pass, which was blocked by cannon, but were stopped. Heavy firing has occurred at Ali Musjid. Only one Afreedi tribe is ho-t ile. D. oetr.ber 1. Diplomatic correspondence from Central Asia.shows that General Kanffmann is in constant communication with the Ameer. The Russian Government first said their troops-were marching to Cahill, but afterwards treated the matter as an independent act of General Kauffman’s, declaring he was on su k-leave, and his motive was one of simple courtesy to the Ameer. Russia now repeats her past assurances that she has no intention of intervening in Afghanistan affairs, agigh Bombay, December 2Colonel Roberts’.force advanced, and the enemy in the Pie war Pass. A reconnaissance, which was made, disclosed the enemy’s position. An engagement ensued, resulting in the defeat of°the Afghans. The British loss was slight. Mr Gladstone, in speaking on Saturday at a banquet at Greenwich, urged the Libera's to take united action in imitation of the Tories. He afterwards addressed a monster gathering at Woolwich. He reviewed the policy of the present Government, condemning their secret treaties, and the growing expenditure. He said the entering on the Afghan war without consulting Parliament was a general abridgment of the liberties of the people.
