Jersey Breeders Support Life-time Merit Register
The value of a life-time merit register was emphasised at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Jersey Breeders' Association at New Piymouth yesterday when a remit recommending the council to consider granting a subsidy for ail pedigree Jersey cows qualifying for the Dairy Board's life-time merit register was carried. The true value of a herd sire was not known until the measuring rod was placed on all his daughters, and it could not be determined by the high production of a few selected daughters, said Mr. G. H. Bell. He emphasised the importance of the register in connection with sire survey work, and considered the Jersey Association had been backward in not having introduced such a register years ago. Now that it had been taken up by the Dairy Board, it should be given every support. The life-time merit cow was the ideal, said Mr. R. C. Leach," who submitted the remit. Comment was made that at present only cows under G.H.T. and. where special application was made, cows under C.O.R. test could oualify for the Dairy Board's life-time merit register. On the suggestion of Mr. S. Morgan, the council was authorised to consider the question of forming a life-time merit register of cows under G.O.H.T. and C.O.R. test.
