Subsidising Of Pig Foods With Surplus Money Advocated
Use of the surplus pig money retained by the Government to make cheap pig foods available immediatelv was urged at the annual meeting of the New Zealand Pig Breeders' Association at New Plymouth yesterday. Contending that the surplus money really belonged, to the producers, one speaker considered it a weak attitude to ask for a subsidy on pig foods. In reply to a question whether the money was actually there, Mr. F. Ogle said the money was there and was being held for a leari year. "We are having a lean year now." he added. Mr. James Simpson said the Minister had stated that if pig farmers desired the money as a subsidy on foods he would make it availab'e. Mr. C. H. M. Sorensen pointed out that in 1939-40, with barely averaging 3s ld to 3s 5d a bushell, one merchant's monthly saies were 2000 sacks, whereas in 1942 the price had advanced to between 4s 3d and 5s 3d, and monthly saies had fallen to 720 sacks.
