Cardiff Soldiers Honoured

A large number of residents and friends gathered in the Cardiff hali in honour of Corporal K. Horn, and also to welcome home Private A. T. Watson. A shoulder spray was presented to Mrs. Horn. On behalf of those present, Mr. Shannon presented Corporal Horn with a wristlet watch. He also welcomed Private Watson. Cards and dancing were held. Prizewinners were: Mrs. K. Goodin 1, Miss R. Shannon 2, Miss Smith consolation ; Mr. Shannon 1, Mr. R. Webby 2. Mr. H. Huckstep consolation. The headmistress of the Cardiff school, Miss Taylor, and her mother, were entertained at a social afternoon by friends and pupils. Items given by school children were : Duets, Betty and Nola Stewart. Joslyn Smith and Valerie Smith; solo, Vaierie Myers ; humorous sketch, Nola Stewart, Betty Smith, Valerie Myers and Ron Hawkes. Mr. Myers, chairman of the school committee, in presenting Miss Taylor with a barometer, spoke of the work she had done during her term. Mrs. Taylor was presented with a cup and saucer by the children. Both Mrs. Taylor and Miss Taylor received sprays. A farewell afternoon was given for Mrs. Taylor and Miss Taylor by Mrs. D. Brunton. Competitions were won by Mrs. Shannon and Miss M. Marchant. Mrs. R. Smith is visiting Palmerston North. Miss Margaret Cleary is the guest of her mother for the school holidays. Mrs. D. Huckstep is visiting her mother, Mrs. Horn. Mrs. Wickham was the guest of Mrs. R. Smith. Misses Gwen and Joy Wallis, Palmerston North, are guests of Miss Valerie Myers. Mrs. R. Head, Auckland, is visiting her 6ister-in-law, Mrs. W. Pitcairn. Miss Mary Marchaut is spending the training college holidays at her home.
