Immediate Inspection Of Tornado Damage at Kaitaia

An immediate inspection of damage at Kaitaia will be made by the engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department and the defence construction commissioner, according to an announcement to-day by the acting Prime Minister, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan. The district Public Works engineer, he added, had immediately arranged to take emergency action, to provide temporary shelters, where needed, in the shape of tarpaulins, and for men to collect the iron blown from roofs. Carpenters were brought from an aerodrome to make temporary repairs where they were most urgently needed, and other supplies of labour and materials were bteing arranged. A Treasury Department officer would be sent to Kaitaia to.deal with requests for financial assistance. An intimation that assistance will be available through its disaster relief fund' has been given by the New Zealand Red Cross Society.
