Acute Shortage Of Factory Labour For Cheese-making
Urgent situation arises in Taranaki. To relieve an acute shortage of labour in Taranaki cheese factories, particularly those in the southern part of the province, at least 150 men are wanted immediately. By the flush of the season it is possible the number required may rise to 250 or 300. The need was urgent, Mr. F. H. Muirhead. district manpower officer, explained yesterday. Because of the mild season milk was coming in exceptionally quickly and that meant extra vats in the factories. Each extra vat meant the employment of at least another man. The position was so acute in some factories that employees were being put to a strain working long overtime hours. As many men as possible with factory experience must be found immediately. Mr. Muirhead stated. There were so many vacancies, however, that some of them would have to be filled by inexperienced men and it was therefore necessary that every man available should offer his services.
