Midhirst Girl Guides

At the annual meeting of the Midhirst Girl Guides committee the president, Mrs. W. Vickers, reported a successful year's work, and the secretary, Mrs. Harkness, read a balance sheet showing a credit of £2. A busy year was reported l)y the captain, Miss Dawn Lepper. Mrs. R. Ogier, who took over as iieutenant at the beginnnig of last year could not attend, and Miss I. Hunt, who resighed as acting Brown Owl took over as Iieutenant. For six months Brownies and Guides have combined. There were 20 guides and 12 Brownies, an increase of.four Guides and four Brownies in the year, Guides and Brownies raised £2 from the collection of paper and bottles, and this sum was forwarded to headquarters towards Trefrul Hut. Large parcels of clothes were sent overseas and to the navy, and a parcel of presents was made up by Guides for members in England. A large bundle of clean rags was sent to the -air force. Two camouflage nete were nearly finished. Brownies made two peggy square rugs, and Guides were doing special knitting for headquarters. Instruction in marching was taken by Mr. Tapp. The Kingfisher Patrol won the tennis challenge, but, because of the weather, outside challenges are to be held over until the coming summer. Pohutukawa Patrol received a shield, given by Mrs. Baskin, for most marks during the year. Prizes for attendance resulted: Guides, Jill Lepper 1, Olive Ogier 2; Brownies. Mavis Boyles 1, Beverley Phillips 2. Miss C. Free, Central Taranaki Commissioner, enrolled three new Guides and Brownies were enrolled by Miss Lysaght, who gave a talk on Guides and their work in England. Mrs. Carryer, Stratford commissioner, cut the cake after the candles were lit by Miss Free and blown out by Brownie Beverley Phillips. Officers elected were: President. Mrs. W. Vickers : secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Harkness ; vice-presidents, Mesdames Lepper and Baskin.
