Pupils of High School Assist In Rubber Collection
An extensive drive for waste rubber organised at Hawera yesterday and made by pupils of the Hawera Techmcal High School resulted in the collection of about 500 motor-car tyres, more than 100 bicycle tyres and a considerable quantity of smaller articles. Conducted throughout the borough and the outer suburban areas, the drive was assisted by the cooperation of householders who had stacked at their gates articles for collection. The drive was organised by the stafl of the Hawera Technical High School and the pupils made the collection, being ' allocated to the various streets and making house-to-house calls. The articles collected were deposited at the ends of streets, where trucks made available by Messrs. L. H. Clapham and H. B. Nicholas carted the rubber to the depot. Members of the reclamation of waste committee at Hawera commented on the successful organisation of the drive and its satisfactory results. In addition there were many hotwater bottles, yards of hose piping, bundles of milking machine infiations and several pairs of old gumboots and goloshes. Dozens of pairs of sandshoes and rubber-soled shoes of all kinds were collected as well as rubber bathing caps and capes, pieces of sponge rubber, and rubber matting, rubber rings, tennis balls, pedal rubbers off tricycles, bieycles and motor-cycles, stair treads, a varied assortment of rubber rollers from washhouse wringers, rubber heels and soles and sheeted rubber.
