INCREASED ENTRIES
AGRICULTURAL CLUBS J CROPS AND CALF REARINGI
A maiked increase in the number of , entries for the calf rearing, root crop anci vegetable competitions for 1940 was j reported at a meeting of the executive j of the South Taranaki Boys and Girls' Agricultural Clubs' Association at Hawera on Saturday. The entries total 1113 compared with 950 last year, an increase of 163 in spite of a decrease in the entries for potato growing. The position was reviewed by the ; secretary, Mr. R. McCay, who said that | entries in the carrots and mangold com- I petitions totalled 62 compared with 58 , last year. Sugar beet accounted for 45 entries this year. but there was no comparative figure for last year as sugar j beet was not shown as a separate compe- | tition as was the case this year. There | were 643 entries for the calf rearing I compared with 504. Potato entries revealed a decrease from 172 last year to 136, it being pointed out that last year was an exceptional one, and that the number | for the preceding season was 126. There were 227 vegetable plots compared with 216. Entry fees yielded £46 16s 6d, said Mr. ]• McCay. There was a credit balance of j £85 9s 10d in the banking account and of j £33 12s in the Post Office Savings Bank. Seed potatoes had to be purchased out of the entry money, said Mr. R. Syme, so that the financial report did not reveal the nett position of the asociation's finances. The decrease in potato entries was to be expected as the entries last year were phenomenal. The entry this year was more in keeping with the average. The Whangamomona group held its annual meeting and much enthusiasm was displayed, it being decided to hold calf rearing and vegetable competitions this year, added Mr. Syme. who also reported j that he attended a meeting of the South j Taranaki School Committees Association | and explained the position concerning j the finances of the association. Members expressed satisfaction with the explanation, which made it clear that the funds of the association were being spent to good advantage. It was agreed to invite the Opunake | branch of t "G New Zealand Teachers Institutc to nomjnate a member to the executive of the association, it being pointed out that the area involved included the Opunake. Auroa. Otakeho, Awatuna and Kaponga sehools. The Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. Lee Martin. is to be asked, it was decided, to endeavour to have extra petrol made available for judges of the titions.Details of entries for the 1940-41 competitions ar«:— ■
