Hawera. The rustic humour of Dad and the entertaining behaviour of Dave must by now be an Australian institution. Steele Rudd's classic is brought to the screen with all its inimitabie Australian wit. and if Rert Baile.v, in the title role. had never made a film in his life before he would he accepted a.s one of the frontrankers. Excifement in the Rudd family starts with the acquisition of a horsedrawn fire engine that Dave and the boys put through a rapid course of depreciation and finishes with Dad's election to Parliament and his fighting speech to have the local dam extended. Fred MacDonald. as Dave, is just the realisation of thousands of listeners' expectations; Connie Martyn, who plays the part of Mum, also fils into Ihe wholesome jigsaw, and the rest of the players are splendidly cast. The supporting programme includes "These Children Are Safe," showing the evacuation and care of London's children. Pathelone Weekly, a scenic of Lancashire, "Can You Ski?" in technicolour, "Country Fair" interest and Cinesound News.
