WRONG IMPRESSION

CONCERT FOR TROOPS HAWERA EXPLANATION An explanation calculated to dispel an impression that the concert and picture programme tendered at Hawera as a farewell to members of the third echelon was inspired by the direction of the Opera House, Hawera, was made by the Mayor, Mr. L. H. Clapham, at a meeting of the Hawera and district citizens' patriotic committee last night. "An impression was gained by some people that the Opera House authorities had something to do with the arrangements for the farewell to the third echelon," said Mr. Clapham. "That is not so. The Opera House had nothing whatsoever to do with the arrangements. Committee's Arrangement. "It was decided at a meeting that Mr. J. E. Davies should arrange the concert programme," he continued. This he did, and when he submittec| to the committee the tentative programrfie it provided for one-half of the programme, the second half to be devoted to pictures. The Opera House had nothing to do with these arrangements. "Some people are wrongly under the impression that the evening was put on for the benefit of the Opera House," concluded Mr. Clapham. The first farewell concert showed a profit of 12s. the door-takings being £24 3s, and the expenses £23 11s, said the secretary, Mr. J. W. Harding. in a reporv. The second farewell entertainment showed a profit, of £2 9s lld, the door takings being £20 14s and the expenditure £18 4s ld. The farewell to the third echelon, which was held in the Opera House. showed a loss of £4 17s 4d. The committee received 50 per c.ent. of the door-takings equal to £10 16s, the expenses being £15 13s 4d. It would be seen that in the last case the total doortakings were in keeping with those of the other functions. Included in the expenditure in each case was the cost of the belts given to the soldiers.
