HAWERA TRACK NOTES
(By "Limited.")
CONDITIONS PERFECT
Track and weather conditions were perfect for trainirig operations at Hawera yesterday morning, when chief interest centred in horses being prepared for the Stratford and Waverley meetings. Trestles were put 36 feet from the rails. , Glen Burnim (Toki) and H. Mills Nightly filly went particularly well to record 38 2-5s for three furlongs. i The Nightly-Lady Eka mare has had the name "Every Night" listed for her to race under. A well-developed three-year-old, she promises to be useful. Another of Nightly's progeny in All Night was successful at Geraldine on both days last week. War Lap (Toki) and Viracious (Tutu) registered a good gallop, covering six furlongs in lm 22Js, run evenly throughout. War Lap is in capital order and beat his companion convincingly. Student Prince and Veldette were given routine pace work. Student Prince looks in great condition for near engagements. Air Flight (McDonald) covered three furlongs in 39s in great style and will be ready any time now. Royal Star II did exercise work on the lead. W. Grindlay's Iliad gelding Golden Ring continues to improve and reeled off three furlongs in 38 2-5s comfortably. Gold Grip (Graham) finished threequarters of a length in front of Resingold (Ryan) at the end of four furlongs in 53 l-5s. Friesland (Holland), after being warmed up, led the two-year-old Battle Dress (Cole) in a three-furlong sprint in 39s. Improved by her race at Marton, Winsome Lu (Reilly) pleased by a gallop over five furlongs in lm 7s, the last three furlor^s in 40s. Winsome Lu ran creditabl;- at Marton and will fulfil her engageiflent at Foxton, a course on which she has been successful. Providing a suitable rider can be obtained, Winsome Lu should again run prominently.
Good Schooling Effort. The Illumination gelding Chiltern, ridden by W. Grindlay, gave a pleasing exhibition over four schooling hurdles. The display of Notium (W. Grindlay) was rather disappointing, Grindlay having to chase him into each obstacle. Gitana Lass (McDonald) galloped four furlongs in 554s. Spoiling what promised to be an interesting gallop, Martene (McDonald) bolted before reaching the half-mile post 20 lengths in front of Chief Lord (Ryan), covering his four furlongs in 54 3-5s. Chief Lord was not troubled to follow on, occupying 55 3-5s. Stencil (Holland), who is rapidly coming to hand, finished ahead of Filbert at the end of five furlongs in lm 7s. Silver Gift (Whiro) and Val Pere (Graham) we?e companions over three furlongs, the pair finishing together in 38 2-5s, the last two in 24Js. Silver Gift is becoming wayward and at Marton refused to leave the barrier, taking no part in the race, in which she looked to have winning prospects. Owing to slight indisposition, H. Scally on a last-minute decision scratched his team for Marton at 8.55 p.m. on Friday. A1 though he has horses nominated for Foxton, the trip is not definitely decided on. High Tone suffers from a slow beginner's complex and was again badly placed early in her race at Marton, finishing on well. There is hope for this filly over a longer distance than four furlongs. Retort was kicked at the post on the near foreleg and has had to be eased up in her work.
